Saxon Railway Museum — Attraction in Chemnitz

A very impressive collection of locomotives largely displayed in one half of the double roundhouse. Mostly steam but also some iconic diesel and electric locos. Display is a little cramped in places, but that is the nature of the roundhouse. Also an interesting workshop area, plus a separate narrow gauge system. Nothing big was operating during my visit unfortunately. Probably the most interesting exhibit is the rope operated hump shunting system, or what is left of it, a truly fascinating operstion, fortunately the winding house remains along with the main control box although sadly the systems trackwork was removed at some point. Excellent Railway Museum. The staff at the Ticket Office are very friendly and helpful (Thank you, Maximillian for your outstanding customer service). The Railway Exhibits are outstanding. Amazing trains including steam, diesel, electric, and narrow gauge engines. The museum spans 26 hectares and houses around 50 locomotives. It is the largest functioning steam locomotive depot in Europe and has two historic roundhouses with 20m turntables, historic support facilities (such as coaling). Ein absolutes Muss für Eisenbahnfreunde und Technikbegeisterte! Das Sächsische Eisenbahnmuseum in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf ist nicht nur das größte noch funktionstüchtige Dampflok-Bahnbetriebswerk Europas, sondern auch ein lebendiges Zeugnis der Eisenbahngeschichte. Die authentische Atmosphäre wird durch die unter Denkmalschutz stehenden Gebäude, die beeindruckenden Rundlokschuppen mit 20-Meter-Drehscheiben und zahlreiche technische Anlagen wie Bekohlungs- und Besandungsanlagen sowie eine funktionstüchtige Achssenke verstärkt.

Besonders beeindruckend ist die umfangreiche Sammlung von Dampf-, Diesel- und Elektrolokomotiven verschiedener Baureihen sowie historischen Personen- und Güterwagen. Die Modellbahnanlagen, darunter eine Spur I- und eine H0-Anlage, bieten einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Modellwelt.

Das Museum ist ideal für einen Familienausflug und bietet auch für Kinder spannende Erlebnisse. Die freundlichen und engagierten Mitarbeiter, viele davon ehrenamtlich, tragen maßgeblich zu einem gelungenen Besuch bei. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Sonderfahrten mit historischen Lokomotiven, die das Erlebnis noch authentischer machen.

Einziger kleiner Wermutstropfen: Das Museum ist nur teilweise behindertengerecht ausgebaut. Dennoch lohnt sich ein Besuch allemal – für Eisenbahnfreunde, Technikinteressierte und Familien...
