While heading to the Walhalla, we suddenly spotted a ruin and hey, you all know I really love ruins, so of course we drove up there and had a look!
The castle lies on a hill, and you can best reach it by car. There’s a parking spot in front of the small gate, right next to the cemetery there. You then head up to the wall before you turn left and walk up even higher.
The path is rather steep and not even at all, so it’s better with flat shoes.
You then head over a wooden bridge and through what probably was the gate once? Then you head on, and you can walk to the right or straight ahead to some sort of viewpoint.
From that point you can then ascend even higher, reaching a geodetic reference point and an even better viewpoint. To the left you can even spot the Walhalla, and to the right you can see Regensburg.
Unfortunately there are no signs telling you the history of that castle, but it’s still a really interesting spot. It’s open for all and you don’t have to pay an entrance fee, but once the sun has set, the...
Read moreThe Donaustauf Castle Ruins (Burgruine Donaustauf) are a hidden gem that offer both history and incredible views. Sitting on a hilltop just above the town of Donaustauf, these medieval ruins date back to the 10th century and give visitors a real sense of stepping back in time.
Exploring the old stone walls, towers, and pathways feels like discovering a forgotten world. While much of the castle is in ruins, enough remains to imagine what life might have been like centuries ago. One of the best parts is the stunning panoramic view over the Danube River and the surrounding countryside—it’s especially beautiful at sunset. The site is free to visit and easy to reach with a short uphill walk from town. It doesn’t take long to explore—maybe 30 minutes to an hour—but it’s a perfect spot to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy a bit of quiet history.
For anyone visiting Donaustauf or nearby Regensburg, the castle ruins are a great stop. They’re simple but full of charm, and the views alone make it...
Read moreI visited this place on a saturday in mid of may for sunset along with my friends. There is a small hike that we need to do to reach this place. The hike is easy as the paths are residential roads and a few steps when nearing the ruins. There is a grave yard on to the right at the entrance of the ruins.
After reaching the top of the ruins, we spent few hours before we leave. The view was wonderful. We got to see the cathedral of Regensberg as a tiny structure, river, bridge, and a beautiful sunset.
The buses to go back to Regensberg was just once an hour and that too till 9 pm. So take care of the time you spend on top.
I am adding few...
