Firstly, the walking and cycling directions given by Google Maps are completely wrong. They direct you to a carpark and playground in Stetten, at the bottom of the hill below the Kugelbahn with a dotted line that flies up over the vineyards to where it starts. There isn't a direct walking path and the hill is very steep.
Instead, head out of town along Steigstrasse, which as the name suggests it is very steep, but it will curve around and follow the roads past the Yburg tower to the start of the Kugelbahn. See attached image.
Once you've found the start you're in for a real treat. It is absolutely delightful and a perfect day out for families with children from 2 - 8 years old.
You can purchase wooden balls (kugeln) from the vending machines at the start. They only accept 50 cent pieces and there isn't anywhere to get change so make sure you bring a few coins.
Once you have your kugel you can follow the course of 25 different stations with wooden channels to roll them along, all of which have different themes.
The first few are at the vineyard and use parts of the wine making process such as conveyor belts and presses. Then you walk along the road through the forest where you'll find obstacles for the balls such as catapults, axes, glockenspiels and looping tracks through the woods.
There is nothing more to pay, no one selling food or drink, and you can spend as long as you like enjoying the activities. You also keep the ball you purchased at the start, so you can come back again whenever you like.
The walk ends at an old quarry which has been turned into a safe rock-climbing wall.
Take a picnic and some drinks with you, since there are no kiosks or shops up there.
And it is a stunning setting, looking out on the tops of the vineyards and over the valley. It's the most wholesome and enjoyable day-trip.
I recommend either walking or coming by bicycle, or rather e-bike because...
Read moreIt's located in the vineyards and offers 25 ball tracks along a downhill hike. Make sure you bring 50-cent coins with you to get a wooden ball to use on the tracks. Also drinks and snacks - there is a cafe but it was closed when we were there.
The only issue we had was the parking. There is parking right at the beginning of the track, but our navigation system could not find it. So we ended up parking at the church square of Stetten and walked up. It was a beautiful 20-minute hike that has signs for the Herzogliche Kugelbahn along the way.
What an awesome experience for families. This place should go on your family...
