Wonderful little hut, that feels more remote than it is!
Staff is lovely, the trio were hippy-like, probably all of them climbers, ready to serve you with anything you need and happy to have a chat and a laugh. Food tasted heavenly given the conditions, and beer was cold and from the local (Tegernsee HB) brewery. My only complaint is the price of the breakfast (which seems to be standard, for whatever reason): 15€ for a buffet with eggs, cheap muesli, orange juice, bread and toppings, and filter coffee. You'd to eat A LOT to make your money worth, so I recommend bringing your own morning nutrition.
We stayed for two nights on rainy days, and thus didn't have any day-trippers at the hut. The atmosphere was really unique. Our dormitory (lager) was clean, beds were comfy and blankets warm. Remember your hut sleeping bag (liner)!
The hike up via the Red route is not hard, expect for some loose rocks, and probably very enjoyable on a sunny day. Black route, we didn't take, but heard that it's quite a steep climb and already needs both nerves...
Read moreOne of the best mountain Hütte I have been to.... The location is awesome...in between two peaks. The food is amazing and the coffee is fantastic... The staff is very nice and can give you great tips for your hike. The view of the Cross and the other peaks nearby is breathtaking. There are two different routes to reach this Hütte ... One "black category" is the very hard one for the professionals and the other "red category" for all the others.... I'll recommend to take the easier route although it itself is...
Read moreProbably the best views and most dramatic scenery of all mountain huts in the area, but very limited food options. Stew (7€) and soup were the only warm meals on the menu yesterday. The homemade cake (4€) was burnt and you have to drink your beer (4€) from the bottle. Admittedly, there is no easy resupply by cable car or 4x4, but other huts provide significantly better service under similar constraints. Try Stöhrhaus at Berchtesgadener Hochthron for a better...
