This was one of the most imoressive and beautiful old castles we have visited since the pandemic. It ist good to reach by car with some parking lots 120m far away from the main entrance. It is a short but steep way up, but you will be rewarded. Entrance fee 3.5€ adults, 2€ reduced. You can be part of tours or other activities, which we did not try. We explored freely. The walk around has some stunning views and you can visit the main tower as well. Many benches to rest and time travel. One star less, because it would be better to have signs directly on the building to explain,...

Die Burgruine Münzenberg ist ein besonderes Highlight in der Wetterau. Die Burganlage wurde im Mittelalter erbaut und diente einst als Schutz für die umliegenden Dörfer. Im Laufe der Geschichte wurde die Burganlage immer wieder umgebaut und erweitert und diente unter anderem als Wohnsitz für Adelige und als Verwaltungszentrum. Heute kann man die Burg besichtigen und mehr über ihre bewegte Geschichte erfahren.

Die Burgruine ist auch bekannt als das „Wetterauer Tintenfass“. Sie ist ein beeindruckendes historisches Denkmal. Schon von weitem ist die Silhouette der Burg mit ihren beiden runden Bergfrieden zu sehen. Sie  zählt zu den bedeutendsten romanischen Burganlagen in Deutschland. Die Burg wurde um 1160 von Reichsministeriale Kuno I. von Hagen-Arnsburg errichtet. Vermutlich hatte Kaiser Friedrich I. Barbarossa den Auftrag dazu gegeben. Die Herren von Münzenberg spielten übrigens eine wichtige Rolle in der Reichspolitik. Das wollten sie natürlich durch ihre anspruchsvolle Architektur und Grüße der Anlage demonstrierten . Vom äußeren Wehrgang kann man die beeindruckenden Buckelquader der romanischen Ringmauer bestaunen.

Leider wurde die Anlage nie vollendet. Der Palas blieb unverputzt, die Ringmauer wurde nur um drei Seiten der Burg geführt und vom zweiten Bergfried konnte nur der Unterbau fertig gestellt werden. Trotzdem ist die Burg Münzenberg ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel für Touristen und Einheimische.
