This is a great hike up through the gorge with a bit of history to go along with it. It's very picturesque, even on an overcast day which is fortunate as the cloudy days are likely to have fewer visitors. There is a small entry fee, with a discount if you have a regional guest card - cash only! The trail is well maintained and clean so the fee is definitely justified.

We were also fortunate enough to find a quiet corner under a small waterfall to bathe in the crystal clear water coming down the valley. As you would expect, it was cold but well worth it and was ultimately one of the highlights of our trip. Any wild swimming is, of course, at your own risk and I'm sure the authorities would not recommend doing it. Also, watch out for the horse flies.

We turned our hike into a circular via Ettenberg but this trail is well connected and well signposted to other trails that take you around the surrounding area. You could feasibly walk here from your accommodation if you were staying nearby and do the trail in reverse.

We ended the trail at the Zur Kugelmuhle Gasthof for a bite to eat next to the car park which was...

The entrance is easily accessible by car and public transport. There is a parking lot near the Kugelmühle (marble mill), which serves as the starting point for the gorge walk. The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable for families, though parts of the path can be steep and slippery, requiring sturdy footwear.

The hike is approximately 3 km one way and takes about 2-3 hours round trip, depending on your pace and the time spent admiring the scenery. The trail winds through the narrow gorge, with bridges and staircases providing safe passage over the rushing Almbach River. You will be treated to numerous waterfalls, rock formations, and serene pools along the way.

Various vantage points along the trail offer stunning views of the gorge and surrounding landscape. The interplay of light and water creates a magical atmosphere, particularly in the early morning or...

Short but Stunning Gorge Walk

Almbachklamm is a hidden gem and well worth a visit if you're in the Berchtesgaden area. The walk takes about 15–20 minutes one way along a beautiful, well-maintained path that winds through a narrow gorge with a river running below. You walk mostly on bridges and footpaths above the water, with several small waterfalls and crystal-clear pools along the way—absolutely stunning views all around.

The path is very organized and safe, suitable for most fitness levels, and it's an easy yet rewarding experience. There’s a small entrance fee (between €2 and €4 per person), which helps with the upkeep—and it’s clearly well invested, because everything is clean and in great shape.

It’s a peaceful and refreshing stop if you’re exploring the area. Highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone looking for a short scenic...
