I grew up in the Ries Crater and inform you that the entire thing is packed with historical sites, nature, geography, architecture and culture. One of the oldest nobilities live here also. It would take pages to describe this incredibly unique treasure chest and microcosm of Germany and the surrounding countries. An extremely underrated region by any measures. Prehistorical fossils, cro magnon settlements, strong Celtic presence with numerous(@5) flattened hilltops, one, the largest and highest just over the northeast crater wall, roman architecture and infrastructure, up through the dark and medieval ages, through to the Apollo lunar lander training exercises, up until today. Two major films and a series now were filmed over Nördlingen. There were once THREE ring walled and moated cities. Abbeys and convents, hospitals, hunting preserves, waterfalls, springs, brooks and streams, creeks and marshes. Even fishing deep in reeds for catfish, bass, perch, pike, carp, trout, eels, and mussels. There's a Hamlet of only 4 or 5 houses, where one raises venison for restaurants. So tender and not gamey. A broad choice of dining experiences. I could write a book. This crater is imbedded in my soul and soothes my heart whenever I think of or visit. The child who grew up here was blessed.
