Spectacular geological extinct volcano hilltop castle ruin with little left besides wall but has a beautiful chapel (could not go in) atop with the winding path leading up to it adorned with nice mosaics. Plenty of parking at base of paths. Volcanic tunnel cellar was open for inspection. Educational signs abound plus nearby volcanic museum.

Die Ruine einer Höhenburg auf dem markanten Basaltkegel von Parkstein. Die Burg war zu seiner besten Zeit recht groß und hatte namhafte Eigentümer (u.a. Friedrich Barbarossa), heute ist nicht mehr viel davon zu sehen, nur ein paar Grundmauern am Aufstieg zum Gipfel, wo heute eine Kapelle steht. Sehenswert ist m.M.n. vielmehr der Basaltkegel selbst, der ist wirklich beeindruckend.

Wunderschöner Ausblick, bei gutem Wetter kann man bis zum Fahrenberg (Oberpfälzer Wald) sehen. Der Aufstieg ist leicht, selbst mit Kinderwagen machbar. Der Weg ist gesäumt, mit Bildstöcken des Kreuzweges. Die Bilder sind mit Mosaiken gestaltet.Oben auf dem Berg steht eine kleine Bergkirche. Die Anlage ist sehr sauber. Auch die Felsenkeller sind sehenswert.

Von der einst großen Burganlage sind heute nur noch spärliche Reste vorhanden. Die Oberburg die den gesamten Gipfel umfasste ist nicht mehr erkennbar und verdient die Bezeichnung Bugstall,der mit einer Kapelle überbaut wurde. Die noch vorhandenen Mauerreste gehören zur Vorburg. Und selbst da wird nicht mal ein Name erwähnt, geschweige den Infos über Grundriss oder Geschichte. Dabei hatte sie durchaus Bedeutung. Zum Besuch den Parkplatz...
