Lake Konigssee, which is a short drive from the town of Berchtesgaden. The narrow, long lake lies amidst magnificent mountains and is the deepest lake in Bavaria, which reaches a depth of 190 meters. Because the lake is surrounded by high rock walls, it can not be surrounded by foot, so if you want to get to the various beaches you will have to board one of the ferries regularly on the lake. The ferries leave from the town of Konigssee at the northern end of the lake and cycle through the various beaches. A full shuttle ride takes about two hours, so it is recommended to arrive as early as possible. The shuttles begin to operate around 9 am - 10 am and stop the activity around 16:00 - 17:00, depending on the season. A ferry reaches every station about every half hour. If you arrived in a rented vehicle. It is worth putting a parking permit that allows parking for the whole day. Not expensive and time-driven because of the desire to stay as much as possible. Among the main attractions in the lake are: Echo Chamber - A certain section of the lake has excellent resonance. The ferry will sound its horn to show you how loud the echo here is. Church of Saint Bartholomä - This is the first stop of the ferry. The church with the red domes, built in its style at the end of the 17th century, is the most photographed site around the lake. If you decide to get off at this station, you should also consider getting to the Ice Chapel Cave, which is about an hour and a half walk from the church. The walk to the cave is along a marked path and it will take you about three hours to reach it and return. The entrance to the cave itself is dangerous, as there may be collapses within it. However, the road to it is very beautiful and it is enough to look at it from the outside in order to be impressed by the place. The Upper Lake (Obersee) - this lake is just 10 minutes from the last ferry stop, Salet. This lake is right next to the Kings' Lake, but separate from it. The water in the upper lake is so clear that everything around it is perfectly reflected in the water. Sit on the pier and enjoy a few moments of absolute peace. An hour's walk from the lake you can reach the Röthbachfall waterfall, which is 420 meters high and is considered the highest waterfall in Germany. Equal!!!!!! You can easily move here half a day and then return to Konigssee and make your way to the next destination on...
Read moreUsually when I read 5 star reviews, I never trust them because they always seem too positive however, königsee really impressed me. The water looked exactly like it did online, crystal clear with an emerald color and we went on a sunny summer day so it was really refreshing and not cold at all to swim in. We arrived at around 9:00 and had already bought tickets online for 9:15 because we thought there would be a really long cue which to our surprise there wasn't. The queue in the morning consisted of around 3 families and that's it. We then took the 2nd stop, Salet in order to hike to the Obersee which was a really relaxing and accessible walk. There weren't that many people yet as it was still early when we got there around 10:00. I recommend you sit on the right side of the boat on the way there if you take it in the morning and on the right side again once you return in the afternoon, that way you won't have the sun shining on your face and blocking the view. We ate at the self-service Imbiss near the entrance of the Salet, and the food was pleasant, if recommend to drink the fresh buttermilk, the flavor is really rich. Finally, we left the Salet at around 1pm, we didn't have to queue for the boat we fit on the first one that arrived. We got out at the middle stop which by that time was already quite full, we went to the interactive museum and walked around in the forest on the left side where you could find small empty rock "beaches" to swim in. It was so pleasant. In the water we're small tiny fish which massaged your feet 🤣 we left at around 3:00 but only managed to get on the boat at around 3:45 because there was a massive queue for the return boats. However it was worth the wait because this lake is...
Read moreBreathtaking views. Ice capped mountains, coupled with crystal clear waters & fresh open air & skies. This place has been exposed to little to no pollution, they only operate electric boats. Place is well looked after and maintained to keep its natural aesthetics. The boat ride is a must. I visited in February 2025, it was pleasantly sunny. The crowd was little and scattered, which is the way I like it. In my experience the crowd were very diciplined/well behaved adding to the amazing atmosphere.
Everyone on the boat ride were simply enjoying the views. The soothing boat trip made me, in a good way, sleepy and relaxed.
The captain will stop the boat halfway through sailing at a specific point on the lake, then pin drop silence, all you hear is the mild howling wind the sound of water ripples, topped with the warmth of the sun. The captain will play the trumpet 🎺. (Its a tradition). You'll hear a impressive echo of the trumpet against the surrounding valley/mountains/cliffs. This part is mesmerising, its as though the mountain is singing back to you. This was the icing on the cake.
I arrived at the lake early in the morning around 6:30 to 7am. The area around the lake and the lake it self was foggy, you can barely see 2-3 meters in front of you. Alot of the shops hadn't opened yet. Apart from 1 cafe called ; Zechmeister Bakery & Cafe, which came in handy (if I remember correctly, it was cash only). At first I was worried that the fog wouldn't go away quick enough. But having spent 20-30 minutes sipping on some coffee and pastries the fog dissipated with the heat of the morning sun & it became super...
