Westlichster Punkt Deutschlands — Attraction in Selfkant

Here's a thing. If your hire car is from the Netherlands, check to see if you are allowed to cross borders. The car park is in Germany. If you go there you may have breached your car hire agreement. There is no close parking on the Dutch side. The historical information and photos are very good and the facilities are good too. However do not step in the stream because it is against the law. The border with NL makes a corner here. It is the most westerly point in Germany. So why not celebrate that? Car park, displays, boardwalk, bridge and sculpture all add to the quirky fun. Our bike ride started in Belgium, crossed the Netherlands and reached Germany. Bij Het Smalste Stukje Nederland, precies tussen de Maas en Rijn, op de 51e breedtegraad is het meest westelijke puntje van Duitsland te vinden.

Dit punt is gelegen in de regio Selfkant, welke gekenmerkt is door idyllische beekdalen en pittoreske oever- en moerasbossen met talloze fiets- en wandelpaden. Selfkant behoort samen met List op Sylt in het noorden, Oberstdorf in het zuiden en Görlitz in het oosten tot de zogeheten 'Zipfelgemeinden', een verbond van vier gemeenten die in de vier uiterste hoeken van Duitsland gelegen zijn.

Het gebied is afwisselend Duits en dan weer Nederlands grondgebied geweest tot 1963, waarna het Duits grondgebied bleef. Rondom de bijzondere grenssteen is een aantrekkelijke verblijf- en recreatieplaats aangelegd.

Informatieborden met interessante weetjes over de regio zorgen voor een actief uitstapje. En hier is ook gelijk het Smalste Stukje van Nederland gelegen. Nederland is hier zo smal, dat België en Duitsland elkaar bijna raken en op slechts 4,8 kilometer van elkaar vandaan liggen!

Al met al de moeite waard om even een kijkje te nemen.
