Great place to visit to get the experience of the tragedy of the "Berlin" Wall. The town of Moedlareuth was divided when the Soviets and Allied Powers sectioned off Germany after WWII. Unfortunately for the residents of this picturesque farm community, the Soviets and their lackeys (The GDR--East Germans) chose to install a wall right through the middle of town separating families.

This museum offers a comprehensive review of the period before, during and after the wall including many actual parts of the wall; Eastern and Western German equipment. It is well worth the detour to this small town.

The staff is very friendly, some of the staff speaks English but we didn't have any problem understanding the kind lady at the ticket booth who only spoke very little English. Most displays are in English and German, the historical film is offered in English upon request and gives a quick 20-minute overview of this sad...

This place is a hidden gem that whispers tales of a bygone era. This is no ordinary museum; it's a time capsule, a portal to the past, where the echoes of the Cold War still resonate through the air.

As a young soldier stationed in Germany during those turbulent times, the museum and exhibits hold special significance to me. I witnessed firsthand the stark contrast between the two sides of the border, the palpable tension that hung in the air like a thick fog. I watched the hope in the eyes of those who yearned for freedom and the relief in their faces when the Berlin Wall finally came crashing down. I was there, a moment in history as I took part in chipping it away.

I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to learn about the Cold War and the untold sacrifices of the people involved in the...

We are an English family, just to be clear. This museum is an absolute eye opener. One of the best displays of the East-West Germany divide outside of Berlin. This community was divided right through the middle by the wall. The village was known as "Little Berlin". The staff were amazing and did everything they could to help us as we don't speak good German! The display of the checkpoint and wall are extremely interesting. There are a lot of monuments as well. There is also a vehicle museum. It is in a separate building up the hill, though the ticket is required for entry to all museum sections. Don't forget to check if out! There are toilets and a gift shop. Everything is disability accessible, but this is not really a great museum for a rainy day! If you like your recent history, this museum is 100% worth visiting!

The German-German Museum in Mödlareuth is well worth a visit. Only a 10 min drive from the motorway. Easy to find, well signposted. Mostly everything is outside so it really is a "weather dependent" visit. The original wall and outer fencing is still in place. Everything is in German and English. Imagine living in a small village, seperated in the middle by a stream dividing two counties and state systems. Families and friends seperated. Border guards given a "shoot to kill" order if anyone crossed over illegally. That is how it was in this small village with around 40 inhabitants! Go visit it, an education for young and old.
