Hohentwiel Castle — Attraction in Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Singen (Hohentwiel)

Visiting the Festungsruine castle was an extraordinary journey through time, even though the castle itself is 90% gone. The remnants of this once-majestic structure tell a poignant story of history and resilience that left a profound impact on me. Despite the castle's diminished state, its charm and historical significance shine through. Walking among the weathered stones and partial walls, I could feel the echoes of a bygone era. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of human craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of those who built and inhabited this fortress. While much has been lost to the passage of time, the remaining fragments offer a unique glimpse into the architectural marvel that the castle once was. The intricate details that can still be seen hint at the grandeur that once graced these grounds, and it's a humbling experience to stand in the midst of this historical puzzle. The site's interpretive displays and informative plaques added depth to my exploration, helping me piece together the castle's history and imagine the lives of those who lived there. The dedication to preserving and sharing the story of the castle is evident and greatly appreciated. The surrounding landscape, with its sweeping vistas and natural beauty, adds to the enchantment of the experience. Standing atop the castle's remnants, I was treated to breathtaking views that reminded me of the strategic importance of this location. This ruin is absolutely amazing! If you ever drive past it on your way somewhere and you haven't been up there, go for it. You can park your car about half way up and then walk the rest. A few things to note: You have to buy a ticket to get in to the ruins proper. They're cheap (4.5 euros pp), but it means you can't go up before their office opens. Very well run though, also good toilets. The ruins themselves are absolutely not wheel chair accessible, no way. You also have to be okay walking fairly step cobble stone paths, so no walking frames either. A base level of walking fitness is a must have. There's a little kiosk for snacks at the gate of the ruins but it's only open for limited hours, so I recommend to bring at least a bottle of water.

The views from up there are stunning! You can see Lake Constance, lots of fields and forests, at least another 2 ruins on other hills, and so much more. The ruins themselves are lots of fun, and in good condition, awesome to explore for kids. Couldn't recommend this more, plan for about 2...

Am 14. August 2024 besuchten wir die Burgruine Hohentwiel in Singen, von der ich erstmals in einem ungarischsprachigen Reiseführer (Bagó Tünde-Bodeni-tó) gelesen habe. Der untere Parkplatz war bereits voll, als wir dort ankamen, aber darüber gab es noch einen völlig leeren, großen Parkplatz. Von dort gingen wir zurück zum Ticketschalter, der auch ein Geschenkeladen ist, um unsere Tickets für die Ruinen einzulösen. Es ist sehr wichtig, dass Sie Ihre Tickets hier kaufen, da es Sie ohne Tickets nicht durch das Gate kommen können! Die Weg zwischen den Bäume ständig ansteigt – eigentlich recht schwieriges Gelände. Und ist man erst einmal im Inneren der Burg angekommen, kommt man auch nicht mehr zur Ruhe, denn wer zum Turm, also zum höchsten Punkt, gelangen will, muss immer noch bergauf laufen. Es ist traumhaft abenteuerlich, mit allen kleinen und großen Bögen und Gängen (damit die Kinder auch Verstecken spielen können, aber man muss auf sie aufpassen, man sollte sie nicht reinlassen, denn es geht um große Höhen und Tiefen an manchen Stellen besteht sogar Absturzgefahr). Unterm Strich hat mir der ganze Ort wirklich sehr, sehr gut gefallen, wildromantisch, teilweise mystisch, mit tollen Fotomotiven. Ich würde es auch gerne im Herbst, oder im Winter sehen... Der Ausblick ist traumhaft einmalig, sogar bis zum Bodensee. Die Landschaft unter uns ist beeindruckend. Vielleicht liegt es an dem schwierigen Gelände, dass wir tatsächlich nur wenige Besucher trafen und uns ohne Tumult nach Belieben umsehen konnten. Das einzig Negative (abgesehen davon, dass der Aufstieg dort furchtbar anstrengend ist) ist, dass der Abstieg von der Burgruine auf den großen Steinen ziemlich rutschig ist. Sie müssen wir auf jeden unserer Schritte genau achten.
