This is a true natural phenomenon. During the dryer season of the year, the Danube disappears completely underground, only to reappear in the Aachtopf 12 km away as the crow flies. It takes the river about 60 hours to cover that distance. Reason is the karst formation of that region. When visiting in the winter, the riverbed will be carrying water, sometimes so much that it floods the extensive meadows between Immendingen and Tuttlingen.
