This was fascinating. Real rigs out the back. Real nodding donkeys, that you can switch on and watch them operate. It's about 20 minutes drive from Celle, taxi cost €40. There's no cafe. There are toilets. There's a small group indoor part, but the best and largest section is outside, open to the elements. There isn't any shelter if it rains. There's no point in buying the guide - go through the indoor section on the right, wander through to the end and out the door on the left. Follow the path, and note that all the white signs in German flip over, with English on the other side. And you are allowed to operate the pumps (green electrical switches). I didn't know you were allowed to, but couldn't resist pressing, and then hurriedly shut it down in case anyone noticed. But saw that you were encouraged to switch them on on a later sign. Lots of old drilling tools and drill pipe and work...

During a company trip we visited the German Oil Museum in Wietze with a total of 50 people while on our way to Celle. The museum arranged a really nice guided tour for us in English and we learned a lot about the oil and gas industry, its history but also the history and the relation to oil and gas of the two small places Wietze and Celle. Being a player in the Oil and Gas industry it was absolutely great to see one of our own tools displayed in the museum. The two guides Wolfgang and Peter were very knowledgeable and shared their experience and great anecdotes with us. The tour was very interactive and fun. Many thanks to the Museum for a...

I've been working in oil field since 1983. Recently I visited a very good friend of mine who is living in Wietze where is oil museum. And, of course, I had to visit museum. I would compare my feeling to that what child is having when someone gives it a chocolate... That area was know as German Texas. I have learned a lot about oil field history in Germany. Great experience. To say "I strongly recommend visiting German Oil Museum." is not enough. Go there, and you will learn how much Germans contributed to the world's oil industry with...

As a former Chemical Engineer I found this place very interesting. The exhibits outside were good; there was not a lot of English in the descriptions and non-technical people would not all have known what they were looking at. A small number of the exhibits looked like they had been rescued from the scrapyard and were awaiting restoration. Definately worth the time and entrace fee because you rarely get to see this equipment close up.

Interesting piece of history about the development of the oil industry in general & in Germany, specifically in the Wietze area. Small on-road car park, cars only, €7/person, toilets, small cafe. Good museum with excellent old photographs provides overview but everything in German, no translation. Outside a collection of some original equipment from the oil days, some prior technical knowledge or simple translations would be useful.
