This is a great find, though not living up to its full potential in my opinion, from the perspective of someone who came here with her three kids ages 5,3,1.5 years. Essentially this is a 24/7 hour access castle ruin with an adjacent restaurant and a playground. Of course, this review is for the ruin specifically so I won’t go into too much detail but regarding the restaurant, the food smelled good (we only got ice cream) and of course the setting was amazing, but it seemed a little run down and poorly cleaned, and the atmosphere could be way better. The seating is cool as it overlooks and even extends into the castle property, and as for the playground, well, it’s in disarray. The swings and slide look trustworthy enough but the “basketball court” is overgrown, a picnic table looks ready to fall apart, and it hasn’t been mowed in a while even on this June afternoon. Now as for the castle - we parked immediately below the restaurant but it was a small space and I’m not sure we were supposed to be there. There were at least 3 parking lots in the half mile leading up to the castle, if approaching with the castle on the right. There is a stroller and wheelchair accessible ramp as well as a disintegrating staircase up to the castle, and a bridge from the restaurant to the castle. Once in the castle, a stroller might be difficult, and for the awesome lower and upper levels and “tunnels” for lack of a better word, the stairs would be impossible for stroller but the castle is small enough you could leave one with it only out of sight for a few minutes. There was a great map at the entrance though it was hard for me to figure out where I was at any given point as it didn’t correlate with the ruin, only the original appearance of the castle. It also gave a billeted history of the castle. It took us about 20-30 minutes to explore the whole thing, and we were rushing as it was only an hour until bedtime. The ruins are in pretty decent shape other than having some questionable railings and significant litter, including broken glass. Some dangerous spots with risk of falls - don’t leave kids unattended. The view is great. Overall a great place to explore but could be so much better.

Burg-Ruine Falkenstein im Ort Falkenstein im Donnersberg. Eine schöne alte, aber gut erhaltene Burgruine mit ihrem eigenen Charme und viel zu entdecken. Oberhalb der Burg ist auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite ein Wanderparkplatz. Von hier aus ist nicht nur die Burg, sondern gegenüber der Einfahrt auch der Zugang zur „de Lourdes Grotte“. Wer mehr von den Burgmauern sehen möchte, folgt vom Parkplatz aus dem Waldweg hinunter zum Tal. Hier hat man schöne Fotopunkte mit Blick zur Burg und zum Ev. Glockenturm, dem man nach kurzem Weg gegenüber steht. Vorher kommt man noch an Felsgestein vorbei, welches bei Frost komplett mit Eis überzogen ist. Auch hier gibt immer wieder schöne Fotopunkte, die zum Verweilen einladen. Vom Glockenturm aus geht es hinunter ins Dorf mit seinem Brunnen und immer wieder sollte man seinen Blick nach oben zur Burg wenden, um den zauberhaften Anblick, besonders bei Sonnenschein, zu genießen. Über 3 Eingänge kommt man in die Burg, davon führt einer über die Brücke, die Rollstuhl geeignet ist. Kinder werden hier auch ihren Spaß haben, denn es gibt vieles zu entdecken. Nicht nur der weitläufige Burghof lädt im Sommer zu einem Picknick / Rast ein, auch außerhalb der Burgmauern gibt es schöne Plätze.

If you live close by it's a nice castle to visit. It is quite small. With our kids 6 and under we saw everything under 30 min. And that's with stopping for pictures. Nice views. We didn't get a chance to see if there were walking trails so can't comment on that. However, the little restaurant right next to the castle is excellent! Great portion sizes and the food tastes really good. Highly recommend.

Die Ruine Burg Falkenstein liegt auf einem Nebenberg des Donnersberg mit schönem Blick ins Alesenztal und die Hunsrücker Berge. Die Anfahrt durch das Falkensteiner Tal führt durch eine beeindruckende Landschaft. Ein Publikumsmagnet ist die steile Anfahrt vom Falkensteiner Tal mit 25% Steigung. Fahrradfahrer und Motorräder nutzen die Auffahrt um ihr Können zu testen. Unmittelbar in der Nähe von Burg Falkenstein befinden sich zwei Gaststätten, die zur Einkehr einladen. Neben der interessen Burgruine ist die Burg Ausgangspunkt für abwechslungsreiche Wanderungen Richtung Donnersberg zum Ludwigsturm, zur Keltenhütte, zur Kronbuchhütte, Burgruine Hohenfels, Quelle des Appelbach oder die Kupferberghütte. Im Sommer findet man schattige Wanderrouten, im Winter verschneite Wanderwege, die man auch für Skilanglauf verwenden kann.

Nice mountain castle ruins. Free entry. Some food place just few meters away. Possibly a good place for a summer trip with friends and some beers on the outdoor. My choice would be the nice regional one- bischoff falkensteiner weizen :)

This is an interesting historical place. The various placards help to understand how the castle looked and functioned in medieval times. The restaurant there was nice as well. I only had a beer, so I can't speak to the food.
