Doctor Rabe's villa designed by Adolf Rading in Zwenkau near Leipzig is slightly different than all the previous modernist villas that we have visited. 1️⃣ First of all - it doesn't really stand out from the outside. We probably wouldn't notice it while walking down the street. But it doesn't stand out today - almost 100 years ago, when it was built, it was so shocking to the local community that the project was hardly accepted. 2️⃣ Secondly - it is one of the best preserved modernist villas. Almost every piece of equipment and decoration is original (this is due to the fact that it belonged to the Rabe family for a long time and then was sold to an art collector who knew its value and took care of every detail). That's why you wear dedicated flip-flops when visiting (please provide your size when booking your visit) 😀 Speaking of preserved works of art - the walls of the house are decorated with the world's only preserved original frescoes and metalworks by Bauhaus professor Oskar Schlemmer. 3️⃣ Thirdly - this house, of course, served for many long years for residential purposes, but as it is a very expressive manifestation of Bauhaus, with interiors dominated by intense primary colors, it is the first villa of all that we have visited so far in which it would be rather difficult to live today. On the other hand, there are probably many lovers of "strong interiors", so why not? 🙂 Either way, although Dr. Rabe's villa is not one of the most famous period houses, it is definitely worth visiting. However, you must make an appointment in advance via the website. We recommend!
