The most difficult but rewarding hike of our Iceland trip! It took about just under 4 hours to do the entire hike. When we parked we followed the signs pointing to Glymur and started the hike! It took us the way where you go thru a cave and cross a water with a log with ropes. The hike is hard and you are in the wilderness with lots of steep climbing but it is worth it. When you finally get to the waterfall, it’s mind blowing how high up you are. You cannot even see the bottom. Out of this world views. Once you are at the top, you have the choice to go back down the way you came up, or cross a swallow river at the top. We chose to cross the River and go down the other way. That way down was steep and rocky. Glad we went up the other way. Tips: Wear good solid hiking boots and hiking clothes. Pack water and snacks. We ate lunch when we got to the top as we were tired. Prepare for this being a long hike timing wise. This is no quick and easy hike. We are so glad we did this hike. It’s hard but the views you get it out of this world and really makes you realize how beautiful Icelands nature is!

This was my first hike in Iceland so can not say if it is my best or not. But it was an amazing one. You have a slightly easier route and the route that goes through a small cave and then a part over the water and beam where you have some assistance from a rope. I found the part doable but also a bit scary. Then you have a climb up with here and there a rope to hold on to, the climb is not so difficult but you must have some form of condition and be careful, because of the loose stones. I seen a couple who did the climb with a baby on their back and a family with 2 boys aged about 9-12 which seemed like a breeze for them. Everyone experiences the climb differently, some find it very tough while others find it easy. So the decision lies with yourself. If you go all the way round there is a river you have to cross depending on where you walk the water comes halfway up your shin. I really recommend to wear water shoes or slippers then this is slightly easier in the icy water. I have done the climb on a beautiful sunny day but there was still much wind. The total hike took me 2:30

Stellar 4hour loop hike in Iceland! The parking lot is small, you have to drive in quite a bit but it’s free! Once you park, there is obvious signage directing you towards Glymur! On the recommended route, it is rocky and steep at times, and slippery at certain points but it is worth the trek! This route gives you the best views of Glymur (you don’t get to see it as much on the return side). There are a few fun points along the way like a short river crossing with a log and rope in the summer and a small cave. Once you’re at the top, you can either descend the way you came (=moderate difficulty at least), or you can cross the river on top of the waterfall (clear signage). The water is about knee deep, and in September it was cold. Definitely a fun and unique experience. If you decide to make your way across, the reward is that your return trek is very easy, full of rolling green hills, flat terrain with views of the ocean! As with most of Iceland, weather changes quickly so make sure you pack windbreakers and rain gear! I would highly recommend this hike!

This is a bit off the beaten path, but its worth it particularly for the more physically fit hiker. As with most places in Iceland views are generally epic. We took the path to the left at the trailhead and it was very rocky with gravel and many very loose stones. The trail was poorly marked and we felt it to be more suited to more adventurous hikers. It just wasnt a great hike for the casual trekker. We also weren't clear on where to access the top of the fall, so we probably stopped short of the best vantage places. If I went back, which I probably wont, i would take the right trail fork and try the log bridge trail. It seems from other reviews this offered better views. I also actually like the drive a lot more than the hike. Although the last mile off the main road is pretty potholed and bumpy, some of the views on that main road were totally epic...I particularly loved a few sites where the road looked like it just stopped and went into the water at the horizon...you felt like you were driving off the edge of the mountain. Super!

Glymur is a waterfall in Hvalfjarðarsveit, Vesturland, Iceland. It is the second-tallest in the country with a cascade of 198 metres. Glymur was long regarded as the tallest until being surpassed by Morsárfoss, a newly measured waterfall near Morsárjökull in 2011. It is situated at the rear end of the Hvalfjörður.
