Virgin Mary Eikosifoinissa Holy Convent — Attraction in Amphipolis Municipality

I visited the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary Eikosiphoinissa on Friday, June 27, 2025, together with my wife and our little boy. This is a truly peaceful and impressive place, surrounded by beautiful nature and offering a sense of serenity. Tradition says that the apostles of Jesus passed through this area. Kloster der Panagia (Gottesmutter) Ikosifinissa

Das Kloster wurde um 400 n. Chr. angelegt und ist damit das älteste in der Umgebung, wenn nicht gar eines der ältesten ganz Griechenlands. Das Kloster leistete einen unschätzbaren Beitrag zum Erhalt des orthodoxen Glaubens und des Griechentums, während es im Lauf seiner bewegten Geschichte immer wieder von osmanischen und bulgarischen Angreifern zerstört wurde. Zur Zeit des griechischen Befreiungskampfes von 1821 wurde das Kloster das geistige und nationale Zentrum in der Region Ostmakedonien und Thrakien.

Bis 1843 war dort eine Schule eingerichtet, die unter dem Namen „Allgemeinbildende Schule bzw. Griechische Schule“ bekannt war, während zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts über mehrere Jahrzehnte hinweg auch eine Landwirtschaftsschule mit drei Agronomen eingerichtet wurde. Bemerkenswert war auch die Klosterbibliothek. Vor der Plünderung durch die Bulgaren (1917) umfasste sie 1300 Bände, darunter 430 wertvolle Manuskripte.

Der Betrieb des Klosters der Panagia Ikosifinissa wurde 1965 von einem Frauenorden neu aufgenommen. Hier wird am 15. August das Andenken an die Gottesmutter Maria, am 14. September das Fest der Kreuz-Erhöhung (griech. Timios Stavros) und am 21. November das Fest der Erscheinung der Gottesmutter (Eisodia tis Theotokou) gefeiert.

Das Kloster liegt im Pangeo-Gebirge; es gehört zur Verwaltungsregion Serres und ist der Heiligen Metropole von Drama unterstellt und kann besucht werden. Es gillt aber eine Kleiderordnung einzuhalten, nicht dass jemand einen dafür auspeitscht, aber es gebietet der Respekt sich dementsprechend zu kleiden. Keine kurzen Hosen bei Männern und bei Frauen sind Röcke zu tragen. Fotos vom inneren sind leider nicht erlaubt von daher muss man das Kloster mit eigenen Augen...

Μεγάλη ευλογία και κατάνυξη σε μοναδική τοποθεσία με υπέροχες καλόγριες γεμάτες ευγένεια και αληθινή αγάπη...Είχαμε επισκεφτεί οικογενειακώς το Μοναστήρι για τελευταία φορά πριν αρκετά χρόνια και ανυπομονούμε πάλι με την πρώτη ευκαιρία να το ξανά επισκεφτούμε... Ποτέ δεν ξεχνώ την εικόνα του θαύματος που είναι αποτυπωμένη μέσα στο Μοναστήρι, η οποία έχει χαραχτεί από μικρό παιδί μες την ψυχή μου, όταν με το δημοτικό σχολείο και τους γονείς μας επισκεφτήκαμε την Ιερά Μονή το 1985. Ο επί κεφαλής όμως Βούλγαρος αξιωματικός μπήκε μέσα στο ναό και άγγιξε την θαυματουργή Εικόνα της Παναγίας, τότε αυτομάτως μια αόρατη δύναμη τον πέταξε με βία στη μαρμάρινη Κολώνα αριστερά, έσπασε το κεφάλι του και ξεψύχησε. Το αίμα του, ή μπότα του, το πιστόλι του, έμειναν αποτυπωμένα πάνω στο  μαρμάρινο δάπεδο της Εκκλησίας, όπου και διακρινόμενα μέχρι σήμερα.

A great blessing and delight in a unique location with wonderful nuns full of kindness and true love... We had visited the Monastery as a family for the last time several years ago and we look forward to visiting again at the first opportunity... I never forget the image of the miracle that is imprinted inside the Monastery, which has been etched in my soul since I was a small child, when we visited the Holy Monastery with my primary school and parents in 1985. But the leading Bulgarian officer entered the church and touched the miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary, then automatically an invisible force violently threw him to the marble Column on the left, broke his head and cooled down.
