History buffs would appreciate this place. Access is easy. There is a parking lot. Admission is cheap. The site is considered for no more than one hour. The place is arranged as a small open-air archaeological museum with paid entrance and opening hours daily from 08.30 to 15.00 in the summer. Excavations show that the first inhabitants of Mesemvria - Zoni were Thracian tribes who settled the area as early as the early Iron Age. Interestingly, the city was founded by residents of the island of Samos (Samothraki). The ancient settlement arose at the end of the 7th century BC as a fortified port - a colony. The city reached its heyday in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. and became the local center of the local Thracian population. With the establishment of Macedonian rule, the city began to decline. During the Roman period, new roads were built that passed away from the settlement and by the 1st century AD. it is permanently abandoned. Archaeological excavations began in 1966 and have continued intermittently to this day. Walls, towers, gates, dwellings, storehouses, shops, workshops, a street network, a temple of Demeter and a sanctuary of Apollo were revealed. Research continues today. A total of over 2,000 coins have been found, leading archaeologists to connect the settlement with Zoni, the most important center of Samothrace on the mainland, which had its own currency and gave more taxes than any other city of the Athenian union, equal to two talents (to 50 kg). The finds from Mesemvria - Zoni are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Komotini.

The site was very beautiful and i liked to walk around in that historical place. Also the girl who is working there was very nice. She gave us a quick tour and told us what to visit in this part of Greece. Also she was happy to hear that we are from Romania and she is excited to visit Romania. We'll wait for her 🙂

Ruins of ancient Thrace city. Small compared to other archeological sites. I doesn't contain great peaces of ancient architecture like amphitheatres or any other buildings of significant scale. Nevertheless, it was interesting and educational, so you can learn about lifestyle in Thrace.
