This is the second gorge we have done In Crete and it's fantastic , no photos can do it justice you have to do it to appreciate its natural beauty it's truly aw inspiring . There is plenty of parking at the tavern at the top , we were the first In the gorge on the day at 9 am , the first 5 mins is just a normal walk with good views to take in down to the church in the cave, round the corner you faced with a steep decent down man made wooden stairs or rocks to a wooden bridge , after that it gets a bit more energetic and quite tricky In places all the way to the end , the trail in not clearly marked as the markers have worn off over time , it is passable you just have to look at wherethe ropes are , some of the parts are a bit daunting but I'm no expert climber or hiker and I loved it , it gives you the Indiana Jones feeling hanging off gorges with just a rope keeping you there , the gorge were quite dry in September there were no waterfalls but we're a few large pools of water , at the end of the gorge we had to wade knee deep to get out under the bridge just before the lake , we did not know the way back via the road so we simple did it all again the opposite way round and it were truly awesome , we did meet a few people on the way back who were turning around and not going any further , we plan to go back again next year a little bit earlier to see the gorge with a bit more water for the extra challenge , if your not good on your legs or feet I would not recommend this gorge and it's definitely not for flip flops , we did it in normal trainers , definitely a highlight of our holiday I would do it again and I do recommend you trying it for yourself you will not be disappointed , both ways stoping for photos and a sandwich in the gorge we got back to the tavern car park in 3,5 hrs , if you want to taste your adrenaline give this place a go .,...... Oh and if your lucky you'll see the eagles...
Read moreSuch an amazing hike but honestly didn't know how to get to the gorge hike, we accidently discovered it. I heard there was an easy hike and a hard hike but basically, there's an upper hike where most of the tourists go, you can see the church, and a waterfall and view the streams below. To access the harder hike that runs along the gorge, you hike yo the waterfall and walk across the bridge. It seems to end with a giant Boulder but if you walk around the Boulder you will find the entrance to descend into the gorge. A wooden ladder starts the more advanced hike, it was definitely a challenge but the bridges and ropes help significantly to reduce slipping and falling in difficult areas. There were very few hikers on this trail so we weren't always certain about the trail but it just follows the gorge all the way down. Once you see the stream go under a bridge you have hit the end and a pathway goes up on a hill and leads you to the road. MAIN NOTE: GOOGLE MAPS WILL NOT GET YOU BACK!!! We tried Google maps to walk the road back and it led us to dead ends, and nonexistant roads. We were lucky to find a German family that helped us and we navigated back with them. It took 1.5-2 hours to walk back. Total we spent 4-5 hours from start to finish including some exploring the toyritsy hike above and taking in the scenery. The scenery was breathtaking and the gorge hike was amazing. Bring water, good hiking shoes, Sunscreen for the way back and provisions and don't be afraid to get wet, there are some areas where falling in the stream becomes inevitable but it's very shallow.
There's a nice taverna outside the gorge with bathrooms and animals and it's definitely a nice touch, the area...
Read moreHello, I'm a traveler from Korea, and I visited this place in June 2023. Here are some tips I'd like to share with travelers who are considering whether to visit here
1.This valley is divided into Green Route and Red Route, with a total of about 30 minutes for the Green Route and an hour and a half for the Red Route (one way).
2.In the Green Route, you can enjoy easy and casual trekking as well as visit small and beautiful churches.
3.The Red Route is quite challenging. Anyone young and healthy can complete it, but it requires some level of courage.
4.I am a young person who enjoys trekking and sports climbing, but it took me two attempts to complete the Red Route.
5.If you're going on the Red Route, it's advisable to prepare gloves and aqua shoes. You'll need to cross the water a few times, and the amount of water can vary depending on the season. When I went here in June, I crossed puddles that came up to thigh level.
6.There isn't a fixed endpoint, and it seems there are multiple exits where you can get out by car at the final part of the trekking course. However, there isn't convenient transportation at the exits, so you'll need to return to the entrance.
7.As a tip, if you go under the bridge at the final part of the course, there was my favorite endpoint.
8.However, the view at the endpoint isn't particularly special. The scenery you can see while driving by car is better. If you enjoy adventure, I recommend completing this course, but if you're seeking beautiful views, there's no need to...
