This is a great hike through the canyon. Went in mid July from the left side (entrance marked by the gate) and did the long round tour, with a small detour upwards right before the chapel. Total trip around 4-5 hours.

There is no marked path for the detour so you have to figure it out by yourself, but it is mostly visible up the mountain. It leads to a panoramic point and meets a longer trail to Psiloritis. The canyon trail is difficult and a bit steep at the beginning, but not only for pros, it can be done by people with some mountain experience and no fear of heights.

There was no water when we went, so I can’t say how it is when you have to cross the river. The way back (right side) is not so exciting, but still nice to go downwards. Overall, beautiful, unpopulated (except for the amazing vultures) and...

I’m a beginner, and it wasn’t that easy—but if you take breaks every now and then and pause for a moment at the church on top, you’ll make it through in about three hours. I wouldn’t recommend taking the same route back. Just before the church, there’s a sign pointing to an alternative way down. It’s much easier and still beautiful. I saw plenty of eagles really up close—they even have nests along the trail. Very exciting! You won’t regret this hike. Even really sunny weather isn’t a problem, as the path is shaded for more than half the time.

Oh and be nice, there is a broom in the church. Take some time to clean up, I think there are not a lot of people going there so you would collect...

This is one of the most beautiful places in Crete that we visited. In here you don’t go through the gorge, but rather climb above it, so you get beautiful view of the region as at the top. There is a small chapel in the end. You can make a circulsr trip. I would recommend to start jest next to the car park, this path is more difficult, then, not far from the chapel, there is a possibility to go down a different way. This one is much easier to go down. When climbing up, you can see some endemit flowers, goats and vultures. Going the circular path, rok us about 2 hours. It is...
