Visiting the Lasithi Plateau Windmills was a highlight of our trip to Crete! The windmills are not only an iconic part of the landscape but also a fascinating glimpse into the island's rich history and heritage. The drive to the plateau offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, setting the stage for the stunning sight of the windmills.
A few windmills are well preserved and offer a picturesque backdrop for photos. The area around the windmills is peaceful and serene, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Due to NW wind I had also a chance to notice why the Windmills were built in exactly this place.
We had the opportunity to learn about the history and function of the windmills. The locals have a passion for preserving this important part of their heritage so do suport them when you are there.
Our visit to the Lasithi Plateau Windmills was unforgettable experience.

Read moreWe met the owner whose name I have forgotten however, he did introduce himself as the mad Austrian. I think he was a dam fine fella rescuing some of Crete's history for others to see and enjoy. He did explain that he now treats the site as private for a number of reasons but having said that gave us a lovely brief history and personal guide of one of the Windmills that had been restored. To the upstairs the tiniest of stairs to the tiniest rooms below the sail head itself. The room was painted white with the loveliest frescos painted by a friend / a local Italian taverna owner and artist. Shame I didn't photograph those, our little secret! Well worth a visit, if you're lucky you may see the Windmills with sails out and working or better still a chat with the owner. Credit to him for...
Read moreThis is the largest remaining site of traditional windmills in Crete and a stop you can’t skip if you’re heading into the Lasithi Plateau. The drive there is half the fun — fresh asphalt winding in serpentine curves, a real pleasure to handle. Parking is easy, right next to the mills.
At the base, there are a couple of information boards. They’re worn out but still readable, and some of the details are interesting enough to snap a photo and read later.
Only one mill is semi-preserved, but the short uphill walk is worth it. Standing there, you can picture how these huge machines once powered daily life. The wind is intense, funneled right through the ridge — the mills were cleverly fixed to face one direction, no need to rotate for changing winds.
A short but...
