Aposelemis Gorge — Attraction in Municipality of Chersonissos

Not very well known gorge near Hersonissos offering a beautiful walk along a dry riverbed with lots of shadinggreenery and no steep hills. The recommended route would be from the mountain to the sea (with possible return). From Hersonissos coming, drive to the Aqua Plus Waterpark (Kasbelli Road) and from there follow the road towards the Xerokamares Tavern (2.1 km / 3min). Just before this tavern, there is another abandoned tavern on the right, where a worn-out street sign markes the beginning of the walk. Due to the construction of a highway to the new airport (as per Sep 2025), we had to climb up to the new stretch of highway, cross it to find the signposted start of the walking treck on the other side. After about a 30 miutes lovely walk through olive grove you will reach a road crossing. Take the track on the right, down hill. Occassionally you need to walk thru wirefences of which the entrance is not so easy to find. You will reach a resting area (official start of the track) with bush toilets. Not well locked after, overflowing rubbish bin, broken wood fences. Only from there, red/white painted signposts (quiet faded) will guide you through this wonderful area. After about 1.5 hours of walking, we reached a wide area of the dry riverbed which is flanked by steep walls of mountain. A perfect place to have a rest and admire this beautiful and magical place. Nice and pretty adventurous hike through the Aposelemis Gorge. You can park your car near the Xerokamares taverna and then walk to the start of the gorge - check out the TripAdvisor reviews for more guidance on how to get there. The hike has been marked pretty clearly with red/white markings. However, at some point we completely lost track of them and decided to go back. Die Schlucht selbst ist nett, wenn man keine befestigten Wanderwege erwartet. Etwa 6km von der bereits genannten Taverne bis zu den großen Brücken der Bundesstraße. Wir hatten unter den großen Brücken geparkt, und ein Trupp von uns ist nur die halbe Schlucht gegangen, dann umgekehrt, um die anderen mit dem Auto einzusammeln. Für unsere sechsjährigen wäre es schon sehr weit gewesen. Von Norden her gelaufen ist die Schlucht anfangs sehr holprig mit vielen großen Steinen. Man muss also Klettern mögen und gute Schuhe anziehen. Weiter oben wird der Weg besser begehbar. Müll war schon auch dort gelegen, aber naja, man läuft durch ein ausgetrocknetes Flussbett, da schwemmt halt einiges an. Tote Ziege war auch eine zu finden, dafür aber auch mindestens 15 lebendige, bimmelnde unterwegs in den Hängen und vorbei an einer Schaffarm. Keine Toiletten oder ähnliches, einfach nur wandern in der Natur. Anfahrt von Heraklion ca 30 min. Ich würde wieder hin fahren, aber mit besseren Schuhen :).
