I’ve been visiting the caves for almost 35 years, every 2-3 years. This summer I went with my girlfriend and our children.
We went in the cave and the skipper seemed to be very hasty because they’re getting paid by the number of trips, so it was obvious that he was in hurry.
First time in my life I did the trip so fast. I couldn’t even translate to my gf, because the boat was going very fast.
I’m the end I went to complain and they asked me to wait and have another round for free, but I would have to wait an hour. We finally left because we had a road trip, but, to be fair, the responsible person was very kind and he even offered us ice cream.
The skippers are locals, they do not speak English and the audio tour was not available during our visit and it may not be available also during your visit. It’s obvious that the skippers are not educated to provide a professional guidance and they’re good only to drive the boat and to give some poor explanation in Greek. Compared to a guide that I had in a cave in Belgium, it’s the day and night. The guy in Belgium was pationate for what he was doing and he was speaking 3 different languages. Our skipper didn’t even know that it was not allowed to record a video or take a photo with the use of the flash! He told us that there is not a problem and that we could use the flash :o
Also, keep in mind that the tickets are getting sold out during the summer days and that there is a possibility that you go and there are no tickets. Make sure you arrive before 10-11 in the morning!
In some words: The cave is amazing and worth a visit! Totally recommended! But make sure you arrive early and also mention that you do not want to complete the route fast. Ask if the audio tour is available. Important to know: you can buy...
Read moreThe Caves of Diros in Greece are nothing short of spectacular. From the moment you embark on the boat tour through the crystal-clear waters, you're transported into another world. The geological formations are mesmerizing, with stalactites and stalagmites forming intricate patterns that look almost otherworldly. The guide was knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights into both the history and the geology of the caves, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring.
The ambiance inside the cave is serene, with only the gentle sound of water and the occasional drip from the formations breaking the silence. The boat ride itself is smooth and well-managed, ensuring safety while allowing you to fully immerse in the beauty around you.
Photography enthusiasts, bring your cameras! The lighting within the cave creates an ethereal glow that makes for some stunning shots. However, nothing beats the experience of seeing it with your own eyes - the colors, the reflections, and the scale of the place are truly breathtaking.
The tour is well-organized, with clear instructions and respect for the environment evident throughout. It's clear they're committed to preserving this natural wonder for future generations.
If you're in the Mani Peninsula, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Caves of Diros. It's an adventure that combines natural beauty, history, and a touch of mystery that will leave you in wonder long after you've returned to the surface. Highly recommended...
Read moreIt is a beautiful cave, which unfortunately is the victim of its popularity. I've been in a few deep caves in Northern California. Duros is at least on par with them in its beaty, probably a little better. Also, it being flooded gives it more charm. To avoid long wait in the ticket office and parking problems, try to come early, before the busses. Park close to the ticket office first, and by the tickets. Then, drive down another few hundred meters and find parking near the entrance There is a bathroom and a snack barr there. Present your ticket at the entrance. Here, you will need to wait another few minutes before a group of 5 or 6 people for a boat is formed. Overall, with the ticket buying, I waited for about 30 minutes. The entrance fee is 12 euro when they do a short boat loop and 17 for a long loop. They say the water level is high today, and they do a short loop. Well, it is beautiful but ridiculously short. Feels like 10 min atmost. The boat men gave information during the trip, but all in Greek. Just enjoy the beaty. When the boat part is over, you walk through the cave to the exit. This walk is also beautiful. Overall, I think the cave was worth the Ling drive and antrance fee. Keep in mind, if you take a bus tour, everything will be even slower for you, as you need to wait until the entire...
