Pyramid of Lygouri Ruins — Attraction in Municipality of Epidaurus

The remains are scarce and pitifully maintained, yet it is one of only two overall surviving structures of doubtless pyramidic shape in the region. There are many more, but only this one and the one at Ellinikon retain enough of their structural integrity in order to be doubtlessly characterized as pyramidoid. Among the most heatedly and passionately debated constructs, these most likely seem as guardhouse structures. Located upon strategic points on routes leading to and from ancient Argolis, among the first superpowers of ancient civilizations (Mycenean), the safety and control of the critically important road network could thus be guaranteed. The emphasis of the Mycenean civilization on the road network (about 1700 years older than the Roman road network) can also be seen by the massive surviving bridges near Arkadiko, not too far away. The city-state of Argos, fiercely independent and surrounded by expansive neighbors, most namely no lesser an opponent than renowned Sparta, maintained and perhaps expanded the network of guardhouses and watchtowers. Notable specimens can be seen near Fychti, Koilada, Tserfos, and many more. The choice of the pyramidic shape is somewhat puzzling, though, as it deprives the structure of crucial additional uses such as a tower and a signaling platform. Yet it does provide more space and structural strength for a garrison. It is likely that the guardhouses were used in combination with the watchtowers in a complmentary nature.
