Valtaki beach — Attraction in Municipality of Eurotas

Valtaki Beach is a nice spot to visit, but it’s not extraordinary. The highlight is definitely the shipwreck, which adds a unique and cool element to the scenery. I’d recommend reading up on the story of the ship before you go—it makes the experience more interesting and gives you a bit of context while you’re there.

However, the beach has its downsides. Some areas are quite rocky, which can be uncomfortable if you’re planning to walk barefoot or settle in for the day. Also, if there’s even a slight breeze, the sea tends to get wavy, and sea kelp often washes up onto the shore, which isn’t ideal if you’re looking to enjoy a smooth swim.

A beach with everything for NATURE, HYSTORY and SNORKELING lovers! It is a long wild fine sand beach where turtles dig the nests for their eggs. Never to much crowded. The sea is crystal and clear and there are, already from the shore, interesting large stone slabs to explore, full of different kinds of fish. There is the popular DIMITRIOS WRECK that dominates the landscape , interesting snorkeling all around it and in the submerged interior. Between the only equipped beach of Glyfada and the Demitrios wreck are ruins of an ancient building,you can see the remains of the masonry underwater a stone’s throw from the shore. Nicht nur das Wrack der Dimitrios hat sich diesen Strand ausgesucht. Kein Geheimtipp mehr aber wirklich prima Meer! Zum Baden muss man teilweise das Steinriff überwinden, Badeschuhe zu empfehlen. Besser ist es nahe der Taverne. Hinter dem Riff ist schöner Sandboden. Tolle Küste - wir kommen wieder! 2017, 2020 und 2022 haben wir super hier gebadet.

Historie zum Wrack: Die Dimitrios wurde am 23. Januar 1950 als Klintholm für die dänische Staatsreederei DFDS auf der Frederikshavn Werft gebaut und in Dienst gestellt. Die Klintholm wurde von DFDS hauptsächlich auf dem Trade zwischen Kopenhagen und Antwerpen eingesetzt. 1965 wurde die Klintholm nach Griechenland verkauft und in Dimitrios umbenannt.

Strandung: Am 4. Dezember 1980 lag die Dimitrious im Hafen von Gythio als ihr Kapitän dringend ins Krankenhaus musste. Während des Krankenhausaufenthaltes des Kapitäns wurde das Schiff an die Kette gelegt und lag bis zum Juni 1981 im Hafen. Im Juni 1981 entschieden die Hafenbehörden in Gythio, das Schiff auf die Reede vor dem Hafen zu verbringen. Bei einem Sturm am 23. Dezember 1981 riss sich das Schiff ohne Besatzung los und strandete auf dem Strand von Valtaki, da wo es heute noch liegt.
