This is the best preserved medieval tower in Attica, located in the Charadra valley just under 3 km west of modern Marathona. It measures 5.64 X 3.86 metres and stands over 12 metres in height. The walls, 85 cm thick, contain a number of ancient marble blocks used as corner pieces. A levelling course runs along the base of the E wall, projecting 16-22 cm out from it necessitated by the sloping ground on this side. Crenellation is preserved at the tower's top, consisting of four merlons on the E and W sides, and three on the narrower N and S sides. The central merlons on the E and S are very poorly preserved. Irregular openings have been made in the E and W walls at ground level in more recent times. Originally the entrance was at first-floor level on the E side. This has been artificially enlarged so that it does not preserve its original size and shape today. The ground floor was roofed by a vault that is fallen except for parts of the spring in the E and W walls. The apex of the vault was 2.90 m above the contemporary floor level, measured from the keystone bonding point on the S wall. The vault of the first floor is fully preserved. Its long axis run N-S like that of the ground floor. An E-W crosswall, 50 cm thick and now preserved only at its bonding point with the tower's W wall, divides the first floor into two chambers, the southern one a third larger than the...
