The Ancient Theatre of Oeniades is hidden pearl, located on a small hill, 400 m east of the archaeological site of Oeniades. The construction of the theater is dated to the mid-4th century BC. The first excavations of the site took place at 1900, and the second phase was made between 1987 - 1993 by the archeologists Prof. Savvas Gogos and L. Kolonas. The cavea of the theater (the sitting area) was carved out of the grey local limestone, and it consists of 28 rows of seats, of which only 19 remain. The theater is open to the public, and every summer it hosts concerts and plays as a part of the Oeniades Festival. Despite the excavations, the place still requires a lot of restoration and rehabilitation work in order to bring it back to its glory (I hope they will find the necessary budget for that). Arriving there requires 10 minutes walk uphill from the parking area and if you are about to watch a play, don't forget to bring...
Read moreThis was well worth taking the detour from our route to Lefkada for. It was very quiet on Saturday lunchtime. Lots of parking and you can drive quite close to the sites. We were only interested in the boatyard snd the fort/towers and remaining gate. I know ruins aren't for everyone but if they are your thing there is a lot to interest you here in this very compact area. I enjoyed the drive too but its a rural agricultural area and so there were some large pieces of machinery on the move and the road junctions were erm interesting so take it slow and if you can have someone to give you directions...still a great place to visit off the beaten track....
A very nice experience! Congratulations on the maintenance and cleanliness of the space! Unfortunately, many archaeological sites do not receive such care... Of course, we as visitors must also be very careful so that these spaces remain that way, even protecting them, especially in the summer, from the risk of fire. The theater is small but neat and restored in some places. The walls are imposing and thus made by the people of that era, who admittedly did not have the means and tools of today, but they used their minds and hands, who made structures that impress us and perhaps make us feel "few"... The neorium when you see it you are shocked, thinking again about what those people achieved! The entrance fee is very good. It does not make you think or doubt whether it is worth the effort, as unfortunately happens with many places where the prices are outrageous, especially for families. Also the service is very good and friendly!...
