This monumental construction is the cream topping of the massive works undertaken in this region, unmatched in scale in bronze age Greece and perhaps well beyond. The Minyans, an ancient Greek tribe conceived the unimaginable. They were to drain a massive lake and to exploit the fertile lands that would emerge from this seemingly impossible venture. Furthermore... they did it! They built a massive network of drainage channels that guided the waters to the natural routes, guiding them to the sea. Moreover, they enhanced this drainage network with the construction of a tunnel, which was carved into the natural rock with astonishing precision. The farmland emerged, and the surplus produce must have been ludicrous. This had to be kept safe. Therefore, this fortification was built in order to protect and overlook what must have become a source of massive wealth. This is unlike any other Mycenean fortification. It is not a fortified palatial complex for the Anax and for the citizens of the city, though it seems that this may have been its ultimate goal, as it is far larger than any other of its time. Its masonry is clearly Mycenean, though somewhat less attended, with the exception of the gates, where it is of superb quality. Little of the above can be seen here today without the mind's eye. But you can still see the massive walls; 3km, 5,5m thick, more than 130000m3 of quarried stone hauled and put into place. The site is easily accessible but rather challenging to stroll within it, as it is unattended, and no route has been outlined for visitors. Nevertheless, the terrain is quite manageable. Proper footwear is mandatory, and long pants are suggested. Reptiles are not uncommon upon these ruins. Highly suggested for history enthusiasts and scholars. Not for...

They are working on the site but the entrance marked in Google was open and we could walk in and explore. Probably best to leave the car outside but definitely not "Temporarily Closed". Walk up to the Palace at the top of the hill. To get a great view and there were amazing wild...
