One of the most beautiful fortresses of the Aegean, essentially for the view it offers over the sea and some Dodecanese's islands and islets. I give four stars because archeology could install some informational pannel for all those visitors, after all the good work they have done doing the restauration of the structure, making sure it has chances in the battle against time and erosion. The fortresses was restaured and enhanced by the Knights, but dates back to the 13th century, when autonomous byzantine landlords were defending Rhodes, after the sack of Constantinopolis by the fourth Crusade. By the way, once you took the wonderful pictures, (sunset or not), don't miss the little café (kafeneion) in the refreshing garden beneath, where you can drink or eat some of the tasty local products in friendly laid back atmosphere. Don't miss the real Greek hospitality Giorgos offers, cause you'd miss half the charm of the site! Since June 2024 Giorgos was replaced by a big company that took the exploitation of cafétérias for about 30% of national sites of Greece. That is national policy conducted by the ministry of tourism and culture: 3 companies control every single cafeteria of historical & archaeological site of Greece, instead of 150 local families, it will be...

My recent visit to Kritinia Castle was a memorable experience and a highlight of my trip to Rhodes. Kritinia Castle, perched on a hilltop in the village of Kritinia, is a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and history. Built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century. One of the most striking features of Kritinia Castle is its breathtaking panoramic views. From the castle walls, visitors are treated to spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape, including the Aegean Sea and the nearby islands. The castle’s architecture is impressive, with its sturdy walls and strategic layout clearly designed for defense. Although some parts of the castle are in ruins, significant portions have been well-preserved and offer a glimpse into its former grandeur. The atmosphere at Kritinia Castle is serene and reflective, making it an ideal spot for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Visiting Kritinia Castle was a highly enjoyable and enriching experience. The blend of historical intrigue, architectural beauty, and spectacular views makes it a must-see destination for anyone...

DO NOT DO IT!!!!

Because some local people adviced me to go to the castle during sunset, I planned to go late. I was late for sunset allready but I wanted to see the castle. It wasn’t dark yet!!! I didn’t experience such a terrrible driving journey never ever. There are few group of houses throug the way from Ancient Kamiros to Klitenia Castle, not even a village. Of course no other living place either. The way is very crooked and narrow. All around forests, no light, no car, no person!!!! The castle is even dark without any lightining. On the way there are a lot of dears crossing through the road, so you can not go fast never. Even one coyote passed through the road, was easy to see it’s bright eyes in such a darkness. I’m a really a good and talented driver in city and offroad . If you don’t wan’t to die, don’t try to do the same. It was so dark and wild that, on the castle (in the middle of knowhere) the sky and stars were marvelous. If you insist to go to the west side of the island, take a guided tour please....

While driving around the island, we noticed signs pointing to the castle ruins and decided to make a spontaneous detour. The road leading up to the site is mostly tarmac and fairly accessible, with just a few short but steep sections near the top. Our small rental car managed it with no issues. There’s a free car park right by the castle that can hold around 15 cars, which was a nice bonus. Entry to the ruins is also free, accessed via a set of built steps. Just a note – not suitable for a wheelchair access, unfortunately. Once you reach the top, the views are absolutely breathtaking and make the short trek well worth it. We also noticed a small café nearby, but we didn’t stop in so can’t comment on the food or service. Overall, it’s a great little stop if you’re exploring the island – highly recommended if you’ve got an hour to spare and fancy a bita bit of history paired with stunning scenery.
