Aradena Bridge — Attraction in Municipality of Sfakia

ARADENA Brücke - die Brücke über der Aradena Schlucht. Entdeckt haben wir sie, als wir eine Tagestour ins Dorf Agio Ioannis unternahmen, in dem die Straße endet. Die Brücke überspannt die gleichnamige Schlucht und ermöglicht es den Bewohnern des Dorfes den Anschluss zur restlichen Welt. In früheren Zeiten mussten sie am Dorf Araden auf den angelegten Pfad hinunter und wieder hinauf, ein beschwerliches Unterfangen, anstrengend und kräfteraubend. Der aus Agio Ioannis stammende Vardiogiannis wanderte in die USA aus, wurde vermögend und spendete seiner Heimat die Brücke, die 1986 gebaut wurde. Zu finden ist die Brücke im Westteil der Insel auf der Südseite, am Füße des Gebirges. In Kavros am Hotel Vantaris Beach startend fahren wir auf der Epar. Od. Vruson-Choras Sfakion in südliche Richtung. Wir passieren Vrisses, Alikambos, Askifou, nehmen einen Snack in der offenen Taverne "Porofarago" ein, die sich an der Imbros Schlucht befindet, um gestärkt die Serpentinen hinunter zu fahren. Wir erreichen Chora Sfakion und biegen oberhalb nach rechts auf die Straße nach Anopoli ab. Es geht wieder auf den Serpentinen den Berg bis auf eine Höhe von über 600m hoch. Nehmt euch Zeit, um die atemberaubende Sicht auf die Südküste zu geniessen. Krikris auf der Straße sind zutraulich. Hinter dem Bergkamm liegt Kampia und Anopoli, dann erreicht ihr die Brücke. Sie besteht aus einer Stahlkonstruktion, auf der starke Holzbohlen den Straßenbelag darstellen. Der Abstand zwischen den Bohlen beträgt wenige Zentimeter, man kann in den Abgrund schauen. Dieser wird mit 150m Tiefe angegeben. Eine kleine Plattform dient dem Bungeejumping, bei dem das Seil ca. 130m lang ist. Europaweit ist es die zweithöchste Location für dieses Event. Hier ist auch der Beginn, um durch die Schlucht zum Dorf Marmara am Libyschen Meer zu wandern. Ungefähr 9km sind es bis dorthin, jedoch beträgt die Länge der Aradena Schlucht ca. 15km und beginnt an der Drakolakki Höhle am Fuße des Lefka Ori Gebirges.

ARADENA Bridge - the bridge over the Aradena Gorge. We discovered it when we went on a day trip to the village of Agio Ioannis, where the road ends. The bridge spans the gorge of the same name and allows the village's residents to connect to the rest of the world. The bridge can be found in the western part of the island on the south side, at the foot of the mountains. Starting in Kavros at the Vantaris Beach Hotel, we drive south on the Epar. Od. Vruson-Choras Sfakion. We pass Vrisses, Alikambos, Askifou, have a snack in the open tavern "Porofarago", which is located at the Imbros Gorge, to strengthen ourselves for the drive down the serpentines. We reach Chora Sfakion and turn right above it onto the road to Anopoli. The serpentines take us up the mountain again to a height of over 600m. Take your time to enjoy the breathtaking view of the south coast. Krikris on the road are trusting. Behind the mountain ridge lies Kampia and Anopoli, then you reach the bridge. It consists of a steel structure on which strong wooden planks form the road surface. The distance between the planks is a few centimeters, you can look into the abyss. This is said to be 150m deep. A small platform is used for bungee jumping, where the rope is around 130m long. It is the second highest location for this event in Europe. This is also the start of the hike through the gorge to the village of Marmara on the Libyan Sea. It is about 9km to get there, but the length of the Aradena Gorge is about 15km and starts at the Drakolakki Cave at the foot of the Lefka...

Definitely one of the things to do when in this part of Crete .

Drive uphill and windy roads are worth the views one gets one they reach the old abandoned village of Aradena .

Bridge is well maintained and wood parts are in great condition. Views will take your breath away .

I can see this place being super busy during peak tourist season, so either plan to get here early or arrange your visits to Crete for end September early October .

Parking was very easy at this time of year so plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and walk around the old village .
