Really glad we went to hike the gorge, a stunning experience! €5 per person entry fee - very reasonable. Just be warned, the paths throughout the entire gorge are extremely rocky and you'll need to be able to navigate some tricky areas. Many said its "beginner/easy" but note that its still a trek and you need to be very careful where you're walking. Hike took us (a couple) about 3-3.5 hrs and that was with very limited stops (maybe max of 15 mins total) because you need to go so slow in some areas. If you have hiking shoes highly recommend using, I was slipping a lot wearing trainers and you can also feel the rocky stones on the bottom/sides of your feet depending on the footwear). Bring plenty of water and a hat too. There is a shop halfway but it's a long way to get there. If you start at 9am during the summer you'll be in shade for most of the time but still very very hot.

Sights were still lovely! You will also see a sign towards the end of the hike that says beach is 7km away, don't worry there's a cafe shortly after the sign where you can get the shuttle bus up to the start where you would have parked. You're highly likely to have people to share the shuttle with (the cafe staff just give you a ticket for €5 per person) and they arrange it all.

There's plenty of parking spaces at the start, recommend using the toilets nearby as there doesn't seem to be any actual toilets...

Pleasant walk down the Imbros Gorge, similar to Samaria in some ways. Dramatic cliffs with interesting rock formations. Route is very obvious and easily navigable. Loose stones, so hiking shoes or solid trainers are recommended.

Itinerary wise, I would recommend going down to the bottom of the island towards Frangokastello & spending time there, before parking at the southern Entrance/ Exit of Inbros for free - and getting a taxi up to the top before hiking back down again to the car. This gives you the chance to experience the awesome winding roads both up and down, avoiding the hassle of all those scammy parking places at the top. There are many more free parking spaces at the bottom than the top of the Gorge.

Entrance fee to the Gorge is €5 per person. You can pay with cash or card. We arrived in the evening and the majority of the walk was in the shade (as the mountain blocked the sun). Only saw one other family hiking down with us. The rest of the walk was void of people. There are many (large) lizards, butterflies and goats to be seen on this walk.

We managed to haggle down the taxi price to €20 (for two of us) but I’m pretty sure they would go go down to €15 if you try hard enough. Walk around and ask for prices if you can - don’t settle for the first offer. These are unlicensed ‘taxis’ and ‘busses’. Just locals trying to make extra income. We...

Imbros Gorge easiest we have done in Crete!! Samaria and Irini are a little more tricky!! Taverns at the end is where taxis back to Imbros are if you start there but would also be easy other way round you would have to ring a taxi from Imbros village. Just a tip when you enter Imbros you see loads of signs saying 'free parking, Start of Gorge the start is at the far end of the village down a road to the pebble start BUT if you keep going through the village you come to the MAIN START!! It's a big school like building with a big parking area opposite! It has a Tavena and a small steep path to the payment but (€2.50pp). Also we got the taxi back which was a crewman pickup and my son and I were in the back!!! ALL the taxis back up to Imbros should be open topped the view as you climb up the 'alpine type new road out is spectacular!! There are more taverns further down as the path meets the road nearer Sfakia but the taxi guys have craftily cashed in on the tired thirsty walkers!! Great business plan!! We had a beer and waited for more walkers to land then paid €5 each for the trip back which takes a good 20 mins!! Had a meal on Imbros and it was excellent followed by free flowing free Raki and local fruits!! Great day out!! Took us about 2hrs 30mins to walk it. And about 1hr by car to Imbros from Our...

A great walk, all gradual downhill, completed in around 3 hrs. There's a watering hole around half way down where you can buy a soda and a energy bar, along with some very basic (squat) toilets. We arrived at around 10am, parking at Porofarago then walking down the sign written path to access the Gorge and pay our €3 per person charge (keep the receipt, there's another booth at the end of the walk that will ask for them). Parking at Porofarago was on the road side and there was no charge (ideally though stop and have a drink there before or after). The path is very well maintained and marked out (only one way really to go) and the high canyon walls afford plenty of shaded areas to get a break from the sun. Note though that around the end of the walk the sun will be directly overhead, so either leave a bit earlier or just be prepared for that warmth. There is a taxi at the end of the Gorge, though I had read here that could mean sitting in the back of an open backed truck for the drive back up (it's twisty, steel and if you've ever sat in the back of an open truck, on metal, in heat, you'll know it's not grey. We carried on to the taverna clearly sign posted, grabbed a drink then caught an air conditioned mini van back to our parking space. €7 each for that but very worth it!

In reading other reviews, there a few things that need to be clarified. The hike is 8km one way. If you choose to do it as an out and back, it’s 16km. You can get a taxi to shuttle you from one end to the other; we went in November, so there were no taxis. Searching google maps directs you to the top entrance, but personally, I would rather start from the bottom and walk uphill (though this could be difficult with large crowds going downhill) The hike is average at first, but deeper into the hike there are beautiful slots reminiscent of slot canyons I’ve hiked. I really enjoyed it. If you’re contemplating it, I’d tell you it’s worth it. November was a great time to hike it because the weather was gorgeous for hiking. However, because it is low season, bring plenty water and snacks! The terrain is mostly loose river rock that can get very slick if it rains. Good shoes for this would be highly recommended. I would not do this hike in sandals and would be reluctant to in running sneakers. We completed the downhill in 2 hours and the entire out and back in just under 4 hours. Hiking the uphill direction is a moderate intensity hill climb with a steady elevation gain of 1880 feet over the 8km.
