As somebody whi has studied archaeology this site is a must. The tiny museum at the main entrance definitely helps understand the complex structures seen at the site and to get an idea of the general Mycenean history. A setback is the conflicting information available concerning the opeing times. Various websites stated “open Mon-Sun” or “closed on Sunday or Monday or Tuesday”. Even Greek websites describing archaeological sites gave wrongful information. Google maps was the only one saying that Tuesday is the “closed” day. Which I found out the hard way: I hiked up from some distant village on a Tuesday and met other hopeful visitors when walking diwn again who I informed accordingly. It’s a mystery to me why there is no sign at the bottom (street level) of the strenuous 20min walk stating the...
Read moreExtremely well kept archeological site. VERY interesting and well organised small museum. Superbe view of the whole island from top. Very helpful and nice staff: the lady at the gate gave us information also about the site itself. Toilets available.
I absolutely recommend it.
Reachable: -by car
-on foot by Apollonia, less than 1h (well signalled and clean trail. Medium easy. Extremely beautiful landscape. Good shoes, no flipflop, hat, suncream). Take path 5-6 and then 1a. Check the trail at sifnostrails.com
-on foot from Kastro, but NOT recommended, only for very good hikers (not well kept path, very very steep, hard, long).
Tip for trained hikers: nice but hard and long to do the circle from Apollonia, to the archeological site, then to Kastro and then back to Artemonas....
Read moreWe trekked from Appolonia today mostly via the old town then on the main road then off to the right up the trail to the church. The first gate was closed but path continues to the church yard. Enter from there and side track in the archeological site via the smaller second gate from the church courtyard. Should be open at open hrs. We were there at 11:30 am. There is a road up the entrance where tickets are sold and a car park. As you make your way through from this church yard gate to the front you will be asked to get a ticket as you have wondered about in the site. The small museum was cute. Also has toilets. Great views and...
