Yesterday I visited Domaine Porto Carras winery in Greece and was absolutely blown away by the quality of the wines I tasted, 7 in total. In fact, I would go so far as to say that these are the best wines I have ever tasted, even surpassing those from the famous Bourgogne region in France. The winery itself is located just outside the Porto Carras Resort complex and is the third largest winery in Europe. They make wines from both French and native Greek grape varieties, with some 26 different varieties in total. The grapes were planted in the late 60s and most of the produced wine is sold locally, making it a true hidden gem. What really sets Domaine Porto Carras apart is the rich and valuable history behind it. Although not as old as the famous chateaus of Bordeaux, the winery has a fascinating story. It was established by a French winemaker, Emile Peynaud, who was invited to Greece in the 1960s to help build the winery. Peynaud designed large portions of the vineyard and brought quality vines from France to Greece, thus establishing the first professional wine production of Greece. Overall, I cannot recommend Domaine Porto Carras enough. The quality of the wines, combined with the rich history, make it a must-visit destination for any wine lover. The winery is located within the woods and looks like a massive old not well maintained building. If you come, focus on the wines. We were told that the winery recently got a new owner and within 2 or 3 years this place will have the authentic look again and they can deliver you the full experience. So if you're ever in Greece, be sure to make a stop at this hidden gem and experience the magic for yourself.

We visited the Domaine Porto Carras in the middle of July. We were just two ; my wife and I and were accompanied by a sympathetic guide from Athens who gave us what we experienced as a private tour through the vineyards. More than 20 local and foreign varieties are being cultivated organically. From the vineyards we enjoyed some magnificent views over the sea and the environment. Back in the winery we saw the new machinery recently brought in, visited the bottlery and the hall where the wines are aged in French oak barrels. The building looks a bit dated. After the winery we went to the tasting room where we got to savor 6 of their creations (they offer various tasting options of 3 wines each). Our favorites were the Chateau Porto Carras 2016 and the rosé 5. In the hotel that belongs to the dame estate (Meliton Porto Carras) we also enjoyed the Malagousia white and the Magnus red. Worthwhile a visut and thanks to our very well informed guide.

Despite the fact that the wines of this producer are appreciated. I did not find anything attractive to myself. Vinarnya is located not far from the highway, therefore it is not possible to miss it, while the main territories of the Porto Carras health resort remain on the sidelines. It’s rather not a winery, but a tasting store where, for the money, which I don’t understand, you will be offered a choice of 3 sorts of wine from this producer, and if you want to play sommelier, the staff will help you with this. The range of prices is medium to high, while the standard line can be bought for almost the same money in stores throughout the country, it may make sense to buy an exclusive.

An Exquisite Escape: Domaine Porto Carras

My visit to Domaine Porto Carras was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Sithonia, this winery is a true gem for wine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the breathtaking views of lush vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, framed by the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. The estate exudes elegance and tranquility, providing the perfect setting to unwind and indulge.

The guided tour was both informative and inspiring. The knowledgeable staff passionately explained the rich history of the estate, the meticulous winemaking process, and their commitment to sustainability and organic farming. It was fascinating to learn how the unique terroir and climate contribute to the exceptional quality of their wines.

Tasting the wines was a highlight of the experience. Each glass told its own story, from the crisp Assyrtiko and aromatic Malagousia to the robust Limnio, a grape with roots in ancient Greece. The flavors were perfectly balanced, showcasing the winery’s dedication to excellence. Pairing these wines with local delicacies elevated the experience to a whole new level.

Beyond the wine, the estate offers a serene escape with its picturesque walking trails and opportunities to explore the surrounding natural beauty. It’s a destination that seamlessly combines luxury, culture, and an authentic connection to the land.

Domaine Porto Carras is more than a winery; it’s a celebration of tradition, craftsmanship, and the art of living. I wholeheartedly recommend this destination to anyone seeking an unforgettable experience in Greece. Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or just beginning your journey into the world of wine, this estate is sure to leave a...
