Ancient Theater of Aigeira — Attraction in Municipality of Xylokastro and Evrostina

Ancient theater Aigeira is a well-preserved theater located 3 km southeast to the small town Aigeira on a slope of a hill, 350 m above sea level. The first excavations in the area of Ancient Aigeira began in 1916 by the Austrian Archeological Institute. According to the excavations, the theater is dated to the Hellenistic period at the 3rd century B.C. and as many other ancient theaters in Greece, it was rehabilitated and reconstructed during the Roman period.

The theater has wonderful panoramic view over the Gulf of Corinth and it is well-worth a visit, if only to sit in one of the stone seats, to enjoy the beauty of the amazing view and to feel the wonderful sense of how it felt to be a viewer at that historic era when it...

Arrived at 14:00 and the site was locked. You can see most of the theatre through the fence, but not the information board that presumably tells you about the remains covered by a protective tent. The views are wonderful and not obscured by the fence. There is a parking area but it's down a steep unsurfaced track, the low clearance rental car I had would not have managed it, there is some parking on the road. I don't recommend the road from Ano Egialos, single track, no significant passing places, no barriers , even on the section where there is a steep drop on both sides...

Ενα αρκετά επικλινές και βραχώδες ύψωμα στη βόρεια πλευρά της αχαϊκής Αιγείρας υπήρξε η ιδανική θέση για την κατασκευή του θεάτρου της πόλης. Ο ανατολικός προσανατολισμός του μνημείου επιβλήθηκε από την ανάγκη για αρμονική ένταξή του στο φυσικό περιβάλλον. Το θέατρο, που εντάσσεται σε μια ευρύτερη περιοχή ιερών, ήταν ασφαλώς το σπουδαιότερο κτίριο της αρχαίας πόλης. Η θέα από το κοίλον είναι μαγευτική: μπροστά στο θεατή απλώνεται ένα μεγάλο τμήμα του Κορινθιακού κόλπου και όταν η ατμόσφαιρα είναι καθαρή φαίνεται και η απέναντι ακτή της Στερεάς Ελλάδας. Περίπου τα δύο τρίτα των εδωλίων του κοίλου είχαν λαξευτεί στο φυσικό βράχο, ενώ τα υπόλοιπα συμπληρώθηκαν πάνω σε τεχνητή επίχωση. Η χωρητικότητα του θεάτρου υπολογίζεται σε 3.000 θεατές. ΄Ενα καλά σχεδιασμένο αποχετευτικό σύστημα έστελνε τα νερά της βροχής, που μαζεύονταν στο θέατρο, στο υδραγωγείο της πόλης. Το ελληνιστικό σκηνικό οικοδόμημα παρουσιάζει ομοιότητες με άλλα σύγχρονα θέατρα της Πελοποννήσου. Το θέατρο της Αιγείρας χρονολογείται στα μέσα του 3ου αι. π.Χ. και φαίνεται ότι εγκαταλείφθηκε οριστικά τον 3ο αι. μ.Χ. Κατά την 23 Ολυμπιάδα, το 688 π.Χ. Ολυμπιονίκης στο αγώνισμα του Σταδίου ήταν ο Ικάριος (ή Ίκαρος) ο Υπηρεσιεύς.
