Icefjord Centre — Attraction in Avannaata

A must see when in Ilulissat. The center is housed in an award winning architecturally Danish designed building in the shop of an eagle.

Multimedia interactive displays include recorded audio vignettes of life stories of people from Ilulissat; a film; a short documentary on Egrip Science Station in NE Greenland; VR headsets where you can go right inside various places inside the Egrip station.

There are also numerous large books in three languages with old photos and explanations of the history; fauna; flora and how important the ice is to the local culture.

An hour is sufficient for a quick visit but if you want to read and listen to everything count on 1.5 to 2 hours. There’s a coffee shop serving a simple selection of drinks and local souvenirs and books.

You need to remove your shoes at the entrance and out on felt slippers. There are free lockable lockers for day packs.

Loved the architecture! If the weather is good you can walk on the rooftop and enjoy the magnificent views. The center is rather small but had some interesting pieces/display. It’s also the starting point for several hiking trail namely Semermuit (1.2km), yellow route (2.7km), blue route (7km) and red route (1km). There’s a cafe inside and there’s a no shoes policy inside. Ein ausgesprochen imposantes Bauwerk. An der Stelle, wo einst der alte Heliport war und später der einfache Campingplatz stand, ist heute das Center errichtet. Der einzigartige Eisfjord hat nun auch noch dieses Center bekommen. Der Eintrittspreis ist einfach mit rund 20 € pro Person überhöht. Da hilft auch eine sehr informative Ausstellung zur Geschichte des Ortes und dem Eisfjord nicht hinweg. Das Ambiente ist toll und ein Besuch der sich aus meiner Sicht trotzdem lohnt. Eine Besonderheit kann auch ohne Eintrittspreis genutzt werden. Die Dachkonstruktion ist begehbar und bietet einen zusätzlichen tollen Ausblick auf den Ort und den Eisfjord. Auf einen gut ausgebauten Holzpfad kommt man trockenen Fußes bis runter zum Eis. Ein Weg der sich lohnt zu gehen. Außerdem sind rund um das Naturschutzgebiet, markierte Wanderrouten mit unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgraden ausgewiesen. Man folgt einfach den farbigen Steinen oder Steinmännchen.
