The Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, located at Sermermiut Aqqutaa B 2089 in Ilulissat, is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Greenland. Built right on the edge of the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, it offers a breathtaking combination of nature, culture, and science. The design of the building is remarkable, blending into the Arctic landscape with its wing-like shape that resembles a snowy owl in flight. The use of wood, glass, and stone creates a warm yet modern atmosphere while framing incredible views of the fjord.
Inside, the permanent exhibition called “The Tale of Ice” takes you through the lifecycle of ice, the culture of people living by the icefjord, and the impact of climate change. The displays are interactive and multi-sensory, including soundscapes, films, and even ice cores from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. The rooftop walkway, open in summer, gives a panoramic view of the icefjord and the town, making it a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. The centre also connects directly to the Sermermiut valley, where you can walk along a wooden boardwalk to see ancient Inuit settlement sites and stunning viewpoints.
The atmosphere is peaceful and educational, making you feel connected to both nature and history. The café and shop add to the experience, letting you enjoy a warm drink while overlooking the Arctic scenery. The entry fee is slightly higher compared to other attractions, but the architecture, exhibitions, and location make it well worth the visit. It is a must-see place that combines Greenland’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and urgent climate story in one...
Read moreVery modern building, only open a year or so. You can walk up on the roof. When I visited a sign on the door said "Tickets sold out". I was told that this was because the cruise ship in the harbour had bought all the day's tickets. I was allowed in for coffee and to use the toilets but I didn't look round the exhibition. The 3 walking trails, Yellow, Red and Blue all start in front of the centre. Yellow is very pretty, with fantastic iceberg views. It is an easy walk. As is the walk out and back to Sermermiut which takes the same route as the start of the Blue trail. The Blue trail in it's entirety is longer, more undulating, the path is less well trodden and not a walkway, it is a bit muddy and rocky in places. It is more of a walk/hike, the scenery is more varied and different to the other trails. The Ilulissat walking path map says Blue is 6.9km from the Icefjord Centre to the quarry Stenbruddet and takes 4-5 hours. It took me 2 hours with photo and water stops but not long breaks. You then need to walk back into town from the quarry which doesn't...
Read moreA very interesting place. Its like a mini science centre catered to share about snow, the ice sheet and everything related to this. Super cool.
I love the building... how the 1st thing u come in to are the bathrooms and the locker rooms, u have to change shoes to help maintain the floors. You can put ur winter jackets and stuff here to enjoy the whole area/ exhibition comfortably.
The room opens up the the gift shop and cafe where u can get ur tickets.. to view the exhibition and all, it 150DKK (around 30 SGD) per adult. The ticket includes a device for u to listen to 9 different stories given by the locals abt the ice. A cinema to watch a short film about the journey of snow... and the cool exhibition. Very well done and the user journey to experience this end to end was very well thought off.
The cafe serves drinks and food. Sometimes, they host the local knitting community too. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Went the extra mile to lend me the phone to make urgent calls to the different airlines.
