It was a gift given to the people of Grenada from the people of Italy, as a way of saying thank you for saving the lives of many Italians during a fire onboard the Banca C on October 22nd, 1961. Many Italian still remember what our people did for them to this day. Our Grenadian way of helping each other in times of need, saved many lives that day. Proud to be Grenadian.

On Sunday October 22nd 1961 there was an explosion in the engine room of the ship which was docked in the waters onside the Carenage. The shipped burnt for 2 days before it sank. The landmark is there as a reminder of the lives lost and the sinked ship.

The Christ of the Deep memorial stature overlooking the St. George's Inner Harbour and specifically the Carenage area of the capital. The whole semi-circular area on both sides of the harbour is a picturesque and interesting dockside walk. The waterfront has interest on the land with many businesses, offices and agencies and a bustling marine related activities on the calm port-side waters.
