Parque Arqueológico Uaxactún — Attraction in Flores

This place is a bit tough to figure out if you're a solo traveler with your own rental car. You have to buy a separate ticket from Tikal, it's $50 extra quatzals for foreigners. If you don't buy your ticket at the initial hut when you enter the park you can buy it online. You also have to get a car permit from the administration building near the ticket taker booth, maybe 300m away. Look at a map or ask around. The driving permit itself is free but you have to show your passport, driver's license and provide a license plate to the admin staff. Once you have a separate ticket and car permit you can show them to the ticket taker for a special wristband and drive through the gate of Tikal. You turn just before the Tikal site to go 23 km up the one lane dirt road. We had a two wheel drive Jeep and had no problems getting to town, 40+ minute drive. Les cuento nuestra experiencia esperando les pueda servir: Se pueden comprar los boletos en línea tanto para Uaxactún como para Tikal (así se evita de tener que comprarlos en sitio y hacer fila) Se tiene que tramitar un permiso para conducir hasta Uaxactun qué no tiene costo y lo tramitan en la entrada (no se tarda, 2 min aprox), para el estacionamiento no vimos como tal alguno, pero preguntamos con la gente de la aldea para no ser groseros y quedarnos en cualquier lugar y muy amablemente nos dijo que podíamos estacionarnos en cualquier lugar de la calle, recomendando y ofreciendo debajo de los árboles que estaban fuera de su casa para tener más sombra. Te venden en la entrada mapas de ambos sitios El mapa nos marcaba 30 minutos adicionales a la llegada a Tikal, sin embargo de día hicimos 1 hora y de regreso como ya era noche fue 1.20 horas (nosotros fuimos en carro chico, llego hasta allá sin embargo todo el camino es de terraceria y hay partes no tan bien, por eso tardamos más en llegar sin embrago pudimos llegar, adicional pareciera de un solo sentido el camino pero pasan para ambos sentidos, por lo que a veces pudiera ser un poco complicado que 2 carros pasen, pero se puede solucionar) Todo el camino esta lleno de vegetación, se disfruta mucho. El mapa marca que cierran a las 4, sin embargo en el sitio hay una comunidad, hotel, restaurante y tiendas por lo que pudieran quedarse ahí (nosotros no nos quedamos y no pudimos pasar al restaurante por tiempo), en la primera entrada antes de tikal nos dijeron que podíamos salir en la pluma de tikal a las 6.30 y si estaba cerrado nosotros podíamos levantar la plumilla, por lo que aprovechamos y salimos más tarde (adicional a que el tiempo de traslado aumento mucho) No llevamos guía, ya es cuestión de gustos pero no es obligatorio llevar guía, sin embargo llegando nos encontramos a Daniel un niño de la Aldea que ofrece tour x donación, nosotros aceptamos y lo recomendamos ampliamente ya que es de la aldea y no te lleva corriendo y se ve que le gusta, es un niño encantador que te explica un montón de cosas, a sido uno de nuestros mejores guías! (La desventaja es que solo habla español, y mi novio casi no habla español, pero te puede llevar a recorrer los sitios y mostrarte los lugares, y si hablas español Dani no para de hablar)

Uaxactún and its community are a must visit if you're already in Petén. It's just a 30 minute drive after the entrance to Tikal and 200% worth it. This archeological site is enormous, but more than that, it's a natural reserve, one of the most important green lungs in Central America. Everybody who lives here (less than 700 people) cares so much for the environment and their way of life is exemplary for the rest of mankind. Although there is no electricity, they rely on solar power for basic things. They are all very much in touch with their surroundings and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the history of this site.
