Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum, located on the western coast of Guernsey, is a captivating and unique museum that offers a fascinating look into the island’s maritime history. Set within a historic fort, originally built in the 19th century to defend against French invasion, the museum is dedicated to the numerous shipwrecks that have occurred along the treacherous coastline of Guernsey and the Channel Islands. The museum’s primary attraction is its extensive collection of artifacts salvaged from wrecked ships, including ship’s bells, tools, cargo items, and even personal belongings of sailors. These items offer a poignant glimpse into the lives of those lost at sea. The museum also features detailed exhibits about the geography of the coastline, the dangers posed by the island’s tides and rocks, and the heroic efforts of local lifeboat crews who helped rescue survivors from shipwrecks over the years. One of the most striking aspects of the museum is its location. Fort Grey itself is a circular stone structure, perched on a small island just off the coast and accessible by a causeway. The views from the fort are stunning, making it not only a place to learn about Guernsey’s maritime history but also a scenic spot to appreciate the island's rugged coastline. While the museum is relatively small, it is well-curated and offers an engaging and educational experience. Whether you're a maritime history enthusiast or just visiting for the views, Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum is a memorable stop that provides a deep connection to Guernsey's seafaring past.

A very informative end to our day exploring a new coastline for us since me moved to live and work Guernsey. So glad we waited for spring to enjoy the nicer weather at Fort Grey. The museum is really interesting and definitely worth a visit - who knew there were so many ships wrecked here?! Chris was very kind and friendly at the front desk and we also met some other visitors who let us peek through their binoculars to spot Hanois lighthouse in the distance! Plus, if you have a Discovery Pass, a visit here is free so what’s not to love! We’ll definitely be back.

Fort Grey was a perfect little stop off during our tour around the island. Not only did we learn about the Fort and the many ships wrecked on the coastline, but also a whole host of fascinating facts about the island and its history in general, thanks to Chris - the guide. Our visit lasted around an hour and we felt it was well worth the money.

A Martello tower built in 1804 as a defence against attacks from the French. It has an outer curtain wall and an inner tower resulting in the local name of the cup and saucer. Houses the Shipwreck Museum that displays numerous salvaged items and gives information on many of the over 90 wrecks from the treacherous rocky coast.

16.08.2022 Great museum with lots of history and information and film footage of local shipwrecks. It is surprising how many wrecks there are in the area until you see the granite rocks that would destroy any ship that strayed too close.Well worth a visit.Pay cash at the kiosk or by card at the Guernsey Pearl.
