🌊 Hickam Beach – Hidden Peace Just for the Military Ohana 🛩️🌴 Hickam Beach isn’t flashy, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s one of those quiet gems tucked away from the crowds—clean, peaceful, and strictly for the military community. No packed tourist beach vibes here—just the sound of gentle waves, swaying palms, and the occasional fighter jet taking off like a beast from the nearby runway ✈️😎. This spot became a personal sanctuary for me. I used to ride my mountain bike through the trails every morning, soaking in that salty breeze and watching the sun rise as planes launched into the sky. Talk about a front-row seat to paradise mixed with power. It's not just a beach—it’s a place to breathe, reflect, and reset. The beach itself? Well-kept, never crowded, and with plenty of space to just stretch out and enjoy. Whether you’re into kayaking, paddleboarding, or just chilling with a book and a coffee, Hickam gives you room to do your thing without feeling rushed or surrounded. It’s also lined with well-maintained trails, great for biking, jogging, or taking a slow stroll if you’re just looking to clear your head. And the view—ocean on one side, Air Force action on the other—is a unique combo you won’t find just anywhere. Perfect for military families, early morning warriors, or anyone who appreciates the quieter side of island life. Respect it, enjoy it, and remember how lucky we are to have spots like this reserved for the uniformed few. MTC

A nice beach located on the Air Force base. We've visited twice now. Once at night to watch the sunset & once on a Friday to swim & play on the beach. Both times we visited, the beach was not crowded (although parking was a bit full on the Friday we went due to multiple command events going on) & we had a great time. Lifeguards were there when we went during the day & you can rent canoes/boats but we didn't. Clearly marked swim areas & you're able to put up beach umbrellas and/or sun shades. Although, we had to take our pop-up sun shade down when the wind got too gusty but we were almost ready to go anyway. There is a bar/restaurant nearby called The Lanai. So you could have dinner or a drink & then walk on the beach. The only negative was when we went during the day. The beach is very close to a busy airport runway. You could definitely hear the planes & sometimes smell them. It wasn't bad enough for us to cut our day short though. When we went at night, the smell wasn't there & the sound was greatly diminished. The sunset I took pictures of was amazing! :)

Military beach. ID required to access. A nice calm little beach. Great for families, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. The ocean is almost always calm here. There are two lifeguard shacks that are typically manned till around 4 pm. Ample parking. It can get busy but you can almost always find a spot to put a towel down. The busiest times are usually weekends or federal holidays. It’s a perfect spot for an after work dip in the ocean. There is a portion of the beach set off for kayak/SUP launching and another portion of swimming only. MWR has kayaks and SUPs for rent but they can stop renting if the winds get too high. Overall, not the best beach on the island but gets a higher rating due to convenience and calmness.

Great private (military) beach on an island where all beaches are public. Nice place to get your "beach fix." But if you want waves, you have to paddle out a half mile. Most surfers paddle out either on a kayak or SUP with surf board in tow (see photo), and then tie off to a buoy near where the waves break on the right side of the channel. Left of the channel is called Firsts, right of the channel is called Seconds. You can also pay $7 round trip for a water taxi Fri-Sun. They'll take you out and then pick you up in an hour (or if you want to stay longer, that's fine).

This is a great beach for the military family. The sands are soft and clean. There is nary a wave. It's small enough you can see everyone and everything, but large enough that you don't feel like you've gotta sit in a stranger's lap to enjoy a beach day. And since it is on the military base, there is the safety and exclusivity that comes with restricted access. I definitely recommend as a family day with young children. If you're looking for surfing or other more active activities, this is not the beach for you.

Great beach, restrooms & changing area on site, restaurant next door, great views, safe beach and usually friendly people. Lots of parking, vending machines and it is safe. Update 2DEC24: Still the same, good beach. Pretty safe, low crime, and the water rarely gets choppy. Restrooms and showers still here. Restaurant still just down the beach. Ample parking, too. No major changes as of 25FEB25. Still the same!
