Going by some of the reviews, I think there is much misunderstanding about this railway & the map pinpoint which is understandable. Maybe this might help someone... check days & times online that it runs. If you are a tourist & new to the area, find Végéllomás Bistro on Google maps (Végéllomás means "end station" or "terminus" in Hungarian) & take tram 1 from Miskolc to the Bistro - tram stop "LAEV" is right outside it. (Download Mobiljegy to get a tram ticket or tap on tram drivers door inside tram to pay cash) The train station & ticket office for the Railway is next door to the Bistro. In the ticket office they speak English & German. It is no problem to get a ticket. The train ride is absolutely brilliant. Sit on the right side of the train if you can. Takes you through the outskirts of Diósgyör & winds its way through the forest, over a large bridge & through a tunnel up to Lillafüred. The train takes 30 minutes to reach Lillafüred. Plenty to do once you get there. See the waterfall, the hanging gardens of the palace then go and row a boat out into the loch. Wonderful scenery. On the way back, Végéllomás Bistro is well worth a stop for an evening meal - it is Michelin recommended & fairly priced with nice...
Read moreI would like to leave here some info related to this train, maybe it helps. We took the train this month, April, 2025, therefor the info is updated: tickets: you can buy them from the main station, on Dorottya street, as there is a Touristic info center open on the weekends, as well, and you can pay with credit card. You can buy them also directly from the train, but in this case you will need cash. Very important, I think, it is the fact that you have to buy the tickets only on the day of the travel (you cannot buy them in advance). You can get on the train anytime, as the tickets are not hour-related. the departure station is on Dorottya street, very close to this Info center the train schedule is available on their website, where they keep it updated at Lillafüred stop you can visit the waterfall, the Suspended gardens, the Hamori lake, and the caves nearby. The Palota hotel is there as well, and you can take a walk through the garden around the hotel. Food and drinks are available in the area. There is a toilet too, a very “old” one, but at least there is one (it works with cash, coins, to be more specific, 200HUF) 😁 I recommend to have cash with...
Read moreTHIS IS NOT DEPARTURE STATION!!!
Unfortunately, we have been deceived by the number of reviews this place had. This is only train's depo. Tram personel sent us all the way to Dorottya utca where the train starts the journey, despite the fact that it also stops on the other side of the road, some 200m away. That has costed us 45mins.
Now to the actual service. In my perspective it looks like they don't really want tourists to use the train. Departure station is virtually unfindable on the map. Lady selling tickets only speaks Hungarian. All signs are in Hungarian only. There is no map of the railway, no map of stops. Price is high. I am not surprised that the train was only half-full in high-season.
Back to positives. Departure station has toilets. The ride was great. It is impressive how steep of an angle this train can climb. Open wagons really improve the experience. Kids were in full attention.
To help you navigate, departure station is named "Láev Dorottya utca Végállomás" in Google Maps. The stop next to this place is called "LÁEV Majláth...
