Pretty well curated museum, with a thorough selection of the Hungarian airforce's history with plenty of airframes on display to scrutinize. Parking just in front of the nicely renovated building and the on-site restaurant is okay.
Generally a very strongly recommended museum for anyone into (military) aviation, this alone justifies the effort of an excursion to the picturesque (not) Szolnok.
There are some shortcomings, though, which, after sorted, could make it even more thrilling: the info tables' of the artifacts are providing very specific information, but in some cases (looking at the demo engines) they stop too short in explaining what do we see: they assume the visitor owns pre-existing knowledge about how jet engines work, for example. I would have expected this the other way around, to learn there, standing next to one cut halfway open - this was a huge missed opportunity. Same applies to many other objects, which are on display with bare factual information only (likes of where is it from, until when was it used), without mentioning the broader context how and why these things were used.
The digital tools (touch screens and tablets scattered throughout the exhibition area), which could go on the above missed extra mile, are mostly useless: either they are not working at all, or the content is out of sync with the location/airframes in their vicinity. It's a pity, but not a new issue with digital in general.
All in all, great museum, we had a blast (haha) of time there, you can easily spend 3-4 hours...
Read moreThis is an amazing and unique place in Hungary. It is highly recommended for any aviation and or history enthusiast. The place has a great display of Warsaw Pact military jets from the 50's all the way to the 90's. Any visitors must be aware that even though there is a great indoor display of aviation related artifacts the main sensation is the outdoor display, so I would recommend to visit in a good weather. As negatives I must mention the lack of parking facility. In good weather during a weekend the car park filling up quickly. Also I have to mention that I found rather cheap that after I purchased a ticket I was asked to purchase an additional ticket for be allowed to get into certain choppers or aircraft. I mean c'mon. Appart from these two I would highly...
