Hiking with teenagers, we weren't sure how they would do with all this "wilderness stuff".......I mean how could they keep up with Snapchat streaks without cell service! Haha Well it turns out that even teen boys could appreciate all this trail has to offer. We hiked the NCT side first which I think was a good idea. It is quite hard and there was no water source, so we carried enough to get us to our first 10 miles. Also there is not a whole lot to see on this side..... Then we came to the most beautiful view on top of a high bluff . It was absolutely in beautiful place set up camp..... although we needed to be down close to the river, so we could swim and have a water source right close by. We found a great site not too far off. It was located about 1 mile after the first big bluff where to can see the river. There is nice fire pits and it has easy river access. The only people we saw here were way up on the bluff above on the MRT . The next day we hiked the rest of the loop. There were several numbered sites on the MTR side and plenty of beautiful views of the river. And since we were with teenagers I can say, there was decent cell service on and off through the entire trail. This hike is well worth doing, but proved to be a bit tough for 1 night/2 days. I believe it was about 11-13 miles per day when you add in the couple areas where we lost the trail. Great hike with enough to see to keep even teenagers happy.

I can never get enough of this place! As long as there's been no heavy rain, a small low riding car can get around these sandy two tracks. Thankfully the sherif and dnr patrol all the camping sections ive come across so they help keep the trouble out. Most of the powwow who come here clean up after their self so it's pretty much a nature wonderland!! Plenty of natural hiking options along the river and thru the woods. Wildlife is all around you from tiny mites to creepy 2-3 foot creatures with fluffy tails that show no great as they walk up to you at night..lol true story, my dog was growing and naming and what ever it was just kept walking with grace until i swung my arms around yelling lol... there is no bathrooms so you will have to ruff it or being a portable. Same goes with water. It's a great place to go to destress from the city.

Great place to ride a bike and walk. There are many trails. There where maps available and they were very helpful. If you have time you can explore miles of foot trails. If your time is limited there are still many opportunities to ride your bike on paved trails. The scenery is in the woods so you may want to bring some type of insect repellent. The ride is nice in the summer because there is plenty of shade. I witness plenty of wild life turtles, rabbuts, many species of birds, deer and one snake. Needless to say my day trip was full of adventures and plenty of sights to see. There is a small welcome center with plenty of parking. Schools, clubs and different groups come to explore this beautiful location but I have never found it to be crowded. If you have the opportunity and time I highly recommend this area to explore.

#PureMichigan doesn't get much better than this. While everyone else flocks to the beaches and state parks, the Manistee National Forest can be a bit of a hidden gem. Besides the hundreds of ORV trails and hunting locations, there are also endless lighter recreation possibilities including hiking, camping, birding, and more. The North Country Trail cuts through here, which provides a great opportunity to hike part a gorgeous historic trail. There are several spots for backcountry or rustic camping, you just have to drive around to find one, they're all over. The variety of Forest types and natural habitat is wonderful, not to mention the fantastic wildlife you might encounter all throughout.

This location offers a unique experience. You park on the side of the dam and walk halfway across the expanse on a specific 'walkway' with a lovely view (as cars fly by you). If you pay attention to the signage, you see a small opening in the fence to get to the inside of the natural area. Once inside, there's a path to the roadway. The area isn't well signed at all and I was using a hiking map app to guide us along. Once we found our way though, we were good to go! The trail is lovely and wooded as it follows along the river. There is a bridge and some incline/declines to manage but nothing severe or difficult.

Our family started an annual tradition of a Family River Run. We go down the Ausauble River. We go on kayaks, canoes, tubes and my father takes a flat bottom boat with a trolling motor. This trip takes about 3 hours and boasts some breathtaking scenery of the Huron National Forest. The water is calm enough to bring the young children and shallow enough to stand in much of the time. There are a few areas with strong current to watch out for. A great time to take the trip is mid September when the weather is still mild but the leaves are starting to turn. You will be amazed by the beauty.
