Þórufoss is an absolute hidden gem that took my breath away! Just a short drive from Reykjavík, this 18-meter-high waterfall on the Laxá í Kjós river offers a serene and intimate experience, far from the usual tourist crowds.

Reaching the falls is effortless—a brief 10-minute walk from the nearby parking area along Route 48 leads you to a stunning vantage point. The trail is easy and offers diverse views, making it accessible for most visitors.

The waterfall’s trapezoidal shape and the surrounding moss-covered gorge create a picturesque scene that’s perfect for photography enthusiasts. In winter, Þórufoss transforms into a frozen wonderland, adding a magical touch to its already captivating beauty.

Fans of Game of Thrones might recognize this location as the home of the Children of the Forest, adding a layer of cinematic allure to the visit.

If you’re exploring the Golden Circle and seek a peaceful detour, Þórufoss is a must-visit. Its accessibility, natural beauty, and tranquility make it a standout spot that offers a genuine connection with Iceland’s enchanting...

I'm a destination elopement photographer and I was in Iceland for an elopement and scouting out places to take photos and this quickly became one of my favorite waterfalls! We stopped here as a small detour from the Golden Circle. There's a small parking area (flat gravel area right of the road) that we almost missed, but if you're paying attention it's not hard to find. I've seen that you can climb down to see the waterfall from the bottom, but we chose to take our photos from above. If you go right toward the falls from the parking area, there are a few really awesome viewpoints where you can stand across from the falls. There is one even closer to the top, but we didn't trek that far. Overall, this is a super fun waterfall to visit because you can explore above and below it. The best part was that we were the only people there except for one other couple who arrived as we were leaving. Highly recommend a stop if you're nearby and want a less touristy...

þórufoss is a must stop when visiting Iceland for the first time. It is a short detour off Route 36 when driving from Reykjavik to the Golden Circle. There is a small gravel parking lot and when we went there were quite a few people but soon we had the entire place to ourselves. It was amazing to start our journey here.

On the driving there, we also saw 4 little waterfalls to the right side. This is one of the things I really was surprised at about Iceland. I already knew there was so many waterfalls to see, but we saw SO many random, un named waterfalls all across the country that were so beautiful and some quite large so keep your eyes peeled!

þórufoss was also used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, if you weren't already convinced to go...
