Easily missable when travelling west on Road 54, right at the beginning of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Gerðuberg cliffs are a captivating rock formation well worth the short (1 kilometer or so) detour off the main road.
Arriving in the very conveniently placed parking lot, you can just get off the car and stare in awe of the imposing, vertical columns perfectly aligned in a kilometer long line, like an unflinching, dauntless and eternal army formation. Or, better yet, you can move to take in the fresh air and, more importantly, great view of the surroundings. We went about things (and were quite happy with the result) by climbing to the top of the cliffs and walking their whole length to the other side, stopping every once in a while to look down the 10-15 meter drop or gaze into the distance towards the Eldborg crater; after reaching the end, we returned on the path by their base and were treated with an equally stunning view of the basalt columns rising up against the blue sky.

Everything else in Snaefellsnes is much more striking and beautiful, but cool nonetheless. If you're doing the ring road counterclockwise and this is one of your last stops, you may be disappointed. If you did the ring road clockwise like we did, it's pretty cool.
Don't have to pay for parking/entrance. No need for 4x4 to get here (gravel road off the main road)

If you are driving from Reykjavik and heading to the Snaefellsnes this is the natural first stop, and an ideal stop to stretch your legs after a few hours driving.
The rock formations are natural and this to me is what makes the place so stunning, from the bottom and the top. If you can, be sure to climb to the top (remaining safe of course) because the view here will give you a different perspective. If you are unable to get to the top do not worry, the scenery is equally...
