This is a fairly decent hike to the waterfall. At the beginning you have a good sized parking lot bathroom facilities and there is even a food vendor nearby that has awesome food.
The hike gains in the elevation almost the whole way it's fairly gentle but you might need frequent rest stops for a couple minutes each. The views depending on the day are awesome seeing different geological strata along the way.
There are several areas that you can go out over the gorge which is created for really spectacular views for photos. The end of the trail is at a place where you can see the waterfall on a clear day or slightly foggy day. Right at the river.
The day we went it was cloudy so we couldn't see the falls and many people turn back at that point. We however, decided to follow the river up to see the falls first hand. As soon as we left the main trail we saw there was a trail continuing on that went along the river. This particular Trail was really cool and fun to follow however it did have some areas where it was a little difficult to climb or keep your purchase. There was one section on this part of the trail that you had to cross over the river by picking which rocks to hop on and you certainly did not want to fall in but it was exhilarating.
Continuing on we came to a big rock fall area where we knew the fall was right on the other side lots of people went upwards on this area we decided to go left and down we saw a big Flat Rock that somebody had used some natural chalk to draw a big heart on it. We went down that way went around this big rock and we realized it was a cave next to us and we went in and it was awesome not many people see this cave because they go up instead of left and down towards the river.
Continuing on WE very shortly came to the fall itself which you can get very close to and it's all inspiring even if it's cloudy you look up and the falls disappear upwards into the clouds it was just amazing.
On the way down there was a bridge going over the gorge which took you to the other side we decided to go down that way as there was a small cheap path going down along the gorge. We found that they were in the process of creating another Trail on that side of the Gorge which was just in its beginning stages. It offered different views of the gorge which you can't see from the main side.
At the very end of this particular trail, there was a food vendor which I will put in a different review that was really good food and welcome after the long hike. If you happen to find a pair of white camo gloves along the way,...
Read moreWe visited 18 April 2023. The hike took about 45 mins to 1 hour from the car park with some photo stops in between. The path ends at a viewing platform that isn't right at the bottom of Hengifoss but you still get a good view (see photos). The car park is small but in good condition and has toilets, although not the cleanest, ladies prepare your own toilet paper just incase.
The hike up was pretty steep at the start, and starts right at the car park. It is clearly marked and there is webbing in the ground to prevent you from slipping. The view along the way is magnificent all the time, and there is also another waterfall along the way with basalt columns called Litlanesfoss I think. Make sure you have appropriate footwear, especially towards the end you might need to cross a stream, it's not deep (maybe 5-10cm deep) but it's highly likely you will get your feet wet without right footwear as there is no bridge or anything to get you across, you have to just work it out yourself.
There is actually another hiking trail up that is a lot less steep and goes up more gently and meets the other trail that starts at the car park near the top across a bridge. We took the 1st trail up and this one down, and in my opinion it has better views than the first one, especially of Litlanesfoss and the basalt columns. This trail takes maybe 5 or 10 minutes longer, but I wish I had known about it earlier. If you are facing the signs and the trail leading up from the car park, you can find this 2nd trail on the right hand side, there is a small bridge that crosses the stream to a small food trunk, you will see the...
Read moreHengifoss was a very well-marked trail. There is a food truck that is available sometimes (we arrived first thing in the morning so no one was around). They also are in the process of building a Visitors Centers, educational center, and another building as well. Currently there also is a water closet at the start of the trail. From the carpark, the trail splits off into two trails, one goes across the water towards the food truck. We took the one immediate from the carpark up the stairs. This was the more scenic trail, so I do recommend this trail. There are many points along the trail where it stops to overlook different points of the waterfalls or if you turn back around, the views are amazing as well. There are many sheep gates as well, which you should close as there are sheep along the way to greet you, so say hi. The waterfall at the end is gorgeous. The trail does end prior to the waterfall, but some people it seems venture past the trail onto the rock scramble to try to get to the waterfall. It apparently reaches a point around the turn of the scramble where to reach the fall you would have to go into the water and cross over to the opposite side. Also keep in mind, all of this is in an area where there are falling rocks. I recommend not going past the trail end. The hike in total is just over 6 miles. A lot of...
