Important tips for visiting this place
The waterfall as such is nothing spectacular compared to so many other impressive Icelandic waterfalls. But being the vantage point to capture the famous mountain ,makes it part of the must-do list when visiting Iceland. The mountain is actually trapezoidal. Only from this sideways perspective, does it appear perfectly conical.
The path to the waterfall itself is a very easy 10 min walk suitable even for small children. But the Kirkjufell mountain should not be attempted by casual walkers. Its a 90 minute treacherous hike up and 90 min hike down for experienced hikers only. Read in news that a tourist fell down one day after we visited, taken to hospital in Reykjavik by the rescue team but died due to severe injuries!
The parking is very limited. About a dozen cars and there is no other spots nearby. Be prepared to wait for a few minutes for someone to return from the visit and drive away
There are no toilets here. But 2 km away in Grundarfjördur , there is a Saga centre with toilets, restaurant/cafe, info centre, even a tiny museum and library, a fish & chips mobile van in the parking.

Kirkjufellsfoss is a series of three cascades on the Kirkjufellsa river, which flows from the Helgrindur volcano. Its name translates to known as "Church Mountain Falls," and this small, enchanting waterfall is only 16 feet (five meters) high.
For a small fee there are two car parking lots. Try the second lot closest to the water for the best access to the trail that encircles the waterfall. This spot is also ideal for capturing the reflection of Mount Kirkjufell in the water, adding a magical touch to your photos.

It's probably one of the most famous places in Iceland for photo shooting though, so there is a string competition... If the weather is nice you can be sure it will be crowded. Even more if there is a chance for northern light. To shoot aurora from this place you want to be few hours ahead to book a good spot - I'm not joking! Funny enough, despite this particular spot is full of pros with their crazy expensive cameras and tripods, few meters away from it there are much better places to catch Kirjufell with aurora and they are empty! So, yeah, go for the waterfall guys, leave 'my' spots for me 🤣. Some practical tips: pay for the parking, someone is owning it and keeps this space clean and available for you. Toilet is not there nor the food is. If you're approaching from the parking in the dark and there is autora on the northern sky turn off the headlight unless you want to be shouted by the photographers. You may be lucky to catch autora at this spot but it's worth going...
