The car park here is free! But is also very small so can be busy.
I parked here for free, then crossed the road, walked past the pond/lake opposite kirkjufell and took some nice reflection photos, and then continued walking to the famous waterfall and paid for car park area to take the photo that everyone takes - the one with kirkjufell in the background and the waterfall in the foreground. It took 10-15 mins walk one way.
Arguably the view here is a nicer angle than the one from the paid for car park with the waterfall, and after dark, depending on the time of year and where the moon is, you might get a better picture of kirkjufell with northern lights here because the moon can cast a weird shadow on the bottom half of kirkjufell when taken from the paid for car park. Hence, it's a good idea to take pictures from here and the paid for car park and compare.
