Only hiked up to the first waterfall. It’s an easy trail, but straight uphill. Took us I think an hour round trip? There’s a little bridge around the first waterfall so we just did that little loop. We ended up there during a little rain/snow storm, so it was very windy and the higher up we got, the windier it got and the rain turned to sleet then snow. The view was still unobstructed, but we weren’t up to hiking to the higher waterfall. There is a parking lot that had a handful of spaces when we got there, but there is a little sign saying to pay for parking. Though it was maybe $7ish USD. It had bathrooms as well. So if you’re willing to do the hike, I think the view...

A stunning waterfall surrounded by dramatic basalt columns — one of the most unique sights in East Iceland. The walk to Litlanesfoss is part of the trail to Hengifoss, so you get to see two amazing waterfalls on the same hike.

The trail is fairly steep in places, but well-marked. We took our time and spent about an hour here, enjoying the views and taking photos along the way.

Litlanesfoss appears about halfway up the trail, framed by tall hexagonal basalt pillars that make it look like something from a fantasy movie. A perfect reward on the way to Hengifoss and a must-see stop for anyone who loves Iceland’s waterfalls...

This a lovely waterfall tumbling over basalt columns making for a dramatic scene. It's about midway on the trail to Hengifoss, and easier to access than most other basalt waterfalls, which are uncommon. I recommend taking the trail up one side and down the other, which is another unusual feature of these falls. There's a WC in the parking lot, and stray sheep if you're lucky. The food truck was closed (Oct), and the eastside trail is undergoing improvements. Tackle this one early in the day before the clouds roll in if you're...

Campervan itinerary below 👇 When I was looking into Iceland, I actually couldn’t find any available accommodation (outside of Reykjavik) so we opted to rent a campervan. And even that was slim pickings two months in advance 😅. It worked out super well, and I loved the flexibility of being able to change our plans and go with the flow. We didn’t save any money going the campervan route rather than accommodations (and only had to sell three kidneys 😬) but it was well worth it!
